On CPAP for 3 nights - have gotten sick.....

Post by CPAPLady56 » Sat Jul 30, 2005 4:54 pm

I have been on a REMStar Plus with heated humidifier for three nights. It is helping me tremendously sleepwise. My only problem is after my second night I was a little stuffy and after my third night (last night) I feel downright sick with congestion in my chest.

Is it good that the machine is breaking up congestion? Or, did it cause it? Should I stop using the humidifier? Should I stop using the CPAP?

Has anybody had an experience of this type? I plan to call my doctor on Monday (or should I call sooner)? But, I was hoping I could get a little insight from people on this forum.

THANKS!

Michelle

Yes, call your doc! In the meantime use the Search function (see above) and enter: congestion. Tons and tons of info on this subject. Here's a good thread--click on:

How are you feeling today Michelle? Did you talk with your Dr.? I had a terrible night..only slept 7 hours and none of it was very restful. I feel horrible today...not sure if it's from being tired or getting sick. I hope you're doing better.

I am feeling some better. But I still have congestion in my bronchial tubes and can't lay down without coughing. I really can't stand to put my mask back on, because I feel the heated humidity has played a part in making me sick (despite everyone's assurances to the contrary). I'm thinking about using the cpap without the humidifier just to see if it might work better for me.

I did call the doctor on call Saturday night and he recommended using a nasal spray. He said my numbers weren't that bad, but they weren't that good either. He said if I had to leave the mask off, that would be okay - I would just be sleepy the next day.

I was fighting claustrophobia with the mask, but now that I've gotten sick, I really can hardly stand to put it on.

I'm pretty down right now. I just wish I knew for sure if the CPAP machine had anything to do with me being sick.

I almost wish I had never had the sleep study done. At least I would be able to lay down in blissful ignorance and sleep.

Thanks for your concern. I hope you are feeling much better too.

Michelle

Michelle, I've never had bronchial problems, but a few times when I had the heat on my humidifier cranked up higher than usual I'd wake up with coughing fits. The coughing would persist halfway through the next day. Right or wrong, I attributed it to "too much" moisture getting into my lungs. Never has happened when I use the heated humidifier at halfway or less -- which gives me a sufficient amount for comfort.
