Does Sleep Apnea Feel Like This?
Does Sleep Apnea Feel Like This?
Does this sound like a common symptom of sleep apnea? Upon awakening you feel in your mouth as if there was improper breathing going on during the night?
Re: Does Sleep Apnea Feel Like This?
Uh......... Need more info.
Are you using a CPAP mask when you wake up with "improper breathing"? Or are you just waking up and feeling weird, and have yet to be diagnosed with sleep apnea?
What IS your definition of "improper breathing"?
If you are wearing a cpap nasal only mask, and you wake up with dry mouth, you are very likely "mouth breathing" during therapy, and leaking therapy pressure out of your mouth. You can combat that with a chinstrap, and/or various taping devices to keep your mouth and lips closed and sealed.
Can you give us more information?
Cheers,
Babette

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula.

sleep apnea = to stop breathing while sleeping
common symptoms include:
waking unrested
daytime sleepiness
snoring while asleep
drooling while asleep
nocturia (frequent urge to urinate during bedtime)
weight gain and/or inability to loose weight
cardiovascular disease (heart attack/stroke)
hormonal imbalances
brain cell loss
others may feel free to add to the list ...

I have not been diagnosed with sleep apnea. Sometimes I wake up and feel like my mouth and tounge were doing things while I slept. Like my breathing was impared or something. It's sort of like if you woke up and your arms felt tired like you had been thrashing around. My mouth and tounge feel like they were active and not pssive like they should be during sleep. Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Sounds like a teeth grinding (bruxism) issue. Does your jaw hurt? That might be TMJ. Have you discussed this with your doctor or dentist?

Re: Does Sleep Apnea Feel Like This?
Before using my CPAP, I would wake with a really dry mouth and tongue - so dry I couldn't talk. I would go to sleep breathing through my nose, but wake up with that dry mouth. I was afraid I would have to use a full face mask when on CPAP. Now I am using nasal pillows, and don't have mouth leaks.
Maybe that is what you are talking about? Dry mouth and tongue?

Re: Does Sleep Apnea Feel Like This?
Well, if you're going to go THERE, why don't we just send him the Berlin Questionnaire?
http://www.pur-sleep.com/content/?id=30
Berlin Questionnaire
Obstructive sleep apnea is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, disruptive snoring, repeated episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep and nocturnal hypoxemia. Sleep apnea is not easily diagnosed for a number of reasons, including low public (and doctor) awareness of the condition, lack of patient awareness of nightime apnea events, and the cost of traditional diagnostic techniques and procedures (overnight oxymeter, sleep study, etc.).
The Berlin Questionnaire consists of ten simple questions used to evaluate risk factors for sleep apnea, such as snoring behavior, waketime sleepiness or fatigue, and obesity or hypertension. The Berlin Questionnaire has been proven to have strong predictive value. For patients scoring as being at "high risk" based on the questionnaire, its positive predictive value is 89%. It is the best, most simple place to start the screening process for sleep apnea. Given that doctors now estimate that over 50 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, the Berlin Questionnaire represents an invaluable tool for initiating the screening process.

Re: Does Sleep Apnea Feel Like This?
It could be that your way of describing how you feel is not the same way someone else might describe it. If an apnea event were to wake you up just as the event was resolving, I can see there being some sort of vague sensations, just not something specific as the event was already over before you became awake enough to feel like something had been going on. If any of the other symptoms folks have listed apply to you, wouldn't hurt to get it checked out.

The simple answer is "No, that is not a commonly reported symptom of sleep apnea."Lizter wrote:Does this sound like a common symptom of sleep apnea? Upon awakening you feel in your mouth as if there was improper breathing going on during the night?
I have read thousands of threads on this forum about symptoms and this is the first time that one has been mentioned.
