I think i'll be dumping my humidifier

In accordance with my Insurance company I have to have 3 months of compliance before they will assist with purchase of my machine.
during this time I've been renting.
Even though it's been attached, I haven't turned my M series humidifier on for several weeks. Even before that, i would usually turn it off sometime during the night.
I totally detached it last night and am going to try to go a week without it and see how it goes.
When the time comes to purchase I can then know if i'll need it at night.
Our house rarely gets dry during the winter because we have humidifiers going all the time for the kids.

Last night wasn't too bad. the mask seemed noisier than usual but nothing to keep me awake.

What the DME likely failed to tell you is that you already bought the HH ... the HH is not a rental item.

It is with some companies. Mine, for instance. The insurance policy and I paid for everything connected with my mask, but both the cpap machine and the HH are going through as rental items. I think it also depends on how the DME submits the charges, because when I was doing my preliminary research, some of them told me I'd have to buy the HH right off the bat, along with the mask. Maybe it also depends on the equipment? Maybe mine's going through as a rental because it's an integrated HH?

I had started having a problem with a runny nose that didn't appear to be a cold and did not go away. Several people I talked to said I probably was suffering from dried out and irritated nasal passages. Sure enough, the runny nose stopped a few days after I started using humidity again.

That's a good point, SleepyDragon. Blackneto, IF your insurance is paying for most/all of it, it might be wise to get it anyway, just in case you'd need it at some future time. Things and people and even sinuses change. As rested gal said the other day,

Personally, if a person can get it (via insurance or out of own pocketbook) I think it's better to have bells and whistles that can be turned off if you don't like them. Instead of something so basic that a certain bell/whistle isn't there if it turns out you do need it -- or would simply be more comfortable with it.

There's enough that is inherently UNcomfortable about trying to sleep in this crazy new way. I'm for having every comfort measure possible available whether you find you need it or want it...or not. You can always turn off the extra features. You can't turn them on, however, with a machine that doesn't have them.

Decisions, decisions, decisions......

Good point, plr66. I actually thought of that. I do a nasal flush using a netty pot most nights. Apparently, while it moistens the nasal passage, it does not last against 7 to 8 hours of constant dry air. Even though I've gone back to using a humidifier, I still use the netty pot. I love clear sinus feeling I get.

Even if your house doesn't get dry, air blowing over a surface of most anything is drying. You may find over the long run you'll irritate your sinuses by continually drying them. Just a thought.

You know.... In the year + I've been doing this, I've had to constantly change stuff up. The humidity goes up and down, the pressure goes up and down, I tape and don't tape.

There is NEVER ONE SOLUTION THAT WILL WORK 100% OF THE TIME.

If you've bought the HH, keep it. You may want it some day. I swore I would never use anything but passover humidity, then after several months of that, I started waking up with bloody scabs in my nose. Okay, I was wrong...

It's a moving target. You just gotta keep adjusting according to your needs.

I'll hook it back up.
Apparently there is a difference with using the straight machine and having the HH hooked up with water in it and the heat turned off.

I don't feel awful, but It was uncomfortable for 2 nights.

Having water in your tank, but the heat turned off is called "passover humidity." All CPAPs had that in the early days, before they figured out how to heat the stuff up to deliver more humidity.

I agree with Babs and Gasp. Sometimes I need heat, sometimes I don't. I always need at least pass-over humidity. It depends a lot on the weather.
