What do you guys think of a hybrid solution? Not only might off-topic threads have an obligatory OT prefix in the subject line, but an optional control button or text might be made available so that each user can optionally mask away all OT posts from view. That way many of us can gladly see all posts coming across in one forum. Then other viewers who want less volume can visually mask the OT threads from being displayed.

It would even be possible to toggle masking the other way: displaying only OT posts.... Thus one could display: 1)all, 2) all except OT, or 3) OT only with a control button or two (perhaps next to "bigger font" and "smaller font" up top). Good idea? Rotten idea? ....As if Johnny's programmers needed extra work.

I personally want to continue seeing all posts coming across my display as they currently do.

guess it must be like those old chastity belts where the woman bribed the locksmith to make sure the lock didn't work so that when her husband locked her up during the day when he was gone she could play anyhow

guest - you need a better trade - maybe you can join the army, get one, and see the world

Me thinks guest in all likelihood has a very good sense of humor. Probably a reincarnated blacksmith, though.

Wonder if those locksmiths got paid in cash or bartered services, by the way....

Thanks for the invitation to leave but it ain't gonna happen. The board is too good, in spite of your arrogance, to leave it. Of course I do visit other forums, some small some large. The largest is an example of a well constructed board - Howard Forums - with 11,348,022 posts (looked that up just for you - aren't you special?). I imagine you'd love to be engaged with that one if it were only 1 forum (oh, 7892 currently logged on). The fact that the forum question keeps popping up here should be a clue to take a harder look.

I'm reminded of fellow developers years back that decided we can save an enormous amount of storage space by using a 2 character year field for dates in our large data systems. That one cost a bundle in 1999. Just because it isn't your 1954 Oldsmobile doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Comfortable doesn't always equate to good design.

However, this is not a Republic, actually not a Democracy either, more like a Benevolent Monarchy - hail King Johnny. I will bow to the general weight of responses and graciously withdraw my suggestion.
LOL I always wondered what the agony of defeat looks like

Besides, we've moved on from rethinking the big pot design to rethinking the locked chastity belt design.
