CPAP and Getting Up In The Morning

Post by Chitownbabs » Fri Sep 05, 2008 8:03 am

Since I have been using the CPAP (about a month) I find that I am always hitting the snooze button and wanting to sleep longer. My alarm is set for 5:45am but I have noticed that I have been getting up around 6:15 or 6:30 which of course makes me late for work. It feels to me that I am sleeping so deeply with the CPAP that my body just wants to continue to sleep. Then in the evening around 10 pm or so I start to get really tired and want to go to bed.

Is this normal for a beginner? Will I be able to start getting up at my regular time once I have been on it for a while?

What a great forum this is. I have learned alot!

Well, you are getting tired about 10 PM, but what time are you going to bed? CPAP can't work miracles if you don't allow enough time for sleep.

AND it takes some of us longer than others to start getting the real and full benefit of CPAP therapy. Improvement can be rapid for some and slow arriving for others. For many of us it is a gradual improvement in our sleep and feeling rested and restored in the morning.

Usually this often depends on finding a comfortable and relatively leak-free mask AND getting and keeping our Leak rate under control and w/in reasonable limits. And assuming the sleep lab was able to find your ideal CPAP pressure setting w/one night of titration.

Women are Angels. And when someone breaks our wings, we simply continue to fly.....on a broomstick. We are flexible like that.
My computer says I need to upgrade my brain to be compatible with its new software.

I think you're getting it figured out. Your body has been sleep/oxygen deprived for a long time and now it's wanting to get caught up.
You may have to adjust your time of going to bed (if you can) to try to get more sleep. I know that for me, a couple of nights of less than 7 hours and I can feel it.
Sounds pretty normal to me.

Good luck.

Definitely normal in my world. Everyone's learning curve varies. I've been on for about a year and a half now, and I'm STILL not a morning person.

But I'm not as bad as I used to be. And I would say it's better than the early weeks of therapy. My body has a sleep limit and I find I CAN'T sleep in as long as I would like. But I routinely feel like I'd prefer NOT to get out of bed in time to be at work at 7:30 am.

But only Monday-Friday. I don't feel this way at all on the weekends....

It's not ALL about the CPAP, my dear. Sometimes it's just the normal stresses of life.

I have the same issue. Getting a great night sleep with my cpap. Often 7 to 8 hours straight. But am more sleepy throughout the day than I was ever before when I got hardly any sleep through the night. I find though that I'm not as anxious as I must have been prior to using cpap. I'm 47 and had been a finger nail bitter all my life (probably since when in the womb). Started cpap in June, and without trying stopped biting my nails without trying to. So one new benefit but still sleepy!

I'm just the opposite. On cpap I get less sleep. When I sleep in on Saturday it is to 7:30 am instead of the 10:00 am that was my norm before cpap. I feel better now waking up than I ever did before cpap. And as I stated in a different thread for the past 2 days with my cold I've been off the cpap I have had trouble getting out of bed, and when I do I have a headache.

CPAP didn't make me a morning person either.
