Can't stand the chemical rubber smell of mask and hose
Can't stand the chemical rubber smell of mask and hose
I just got a machine and I am so disappointed. I really want this therapy to work. Its really hard for me to breathe in the smell of the plastic and rubber. I know I'm a little sensitive about smells. Probably a lot of people don't even notice it. But yes, neurotic me, I feel like I'm being poisoned. Thats not very restful. I put a dab of Vicks on my nose a couple times. I don't know... I did actually fall asleep briefly a couple times with using the cpap. That would be 2 times of the 8 that I've tried it. I'm starting to dread bedtime and it used to be one of my favorite times. One of the times I fell asleep I was listening to my ipod but that didn't work last time.
Does anyone else have a problem with the smell?

I have the gel mask (nose only) and the smell is unusual. Never thought of Vicks. My issue is the warm sensation which makes me anxious. I've heard enough from some that it just takes time. .

Try cleaning it with a mix of Vingar and water then washing with baby sampoo.
Mine has a little oder but not to bad. If that doesn't work try other cleaning methods until you find one you like.
A friend of mine uses dish soap to wash his.

You might want to try pur-sleep. Go to http://www.pur-sleep.com. The pur-sleep is easy to use and smells much better than plastic.

I'm so happy I stopped by here today. I have long thought that there should be some type of product to make the air from my c-pap smell better and I am very happy to find out that there is. I have just gone to the Pur-air web site and ordered the starter pack. I can't wait till it gets here to see if it really works. I have high hopes for this product, I sure hope it does work.

I had the same problem.
I use my aromatherapy everynight.
After a couple of nights w/your favorite smell,
you'll be looking forward to it.
You will start to associate whatever smell you choose,
w/your mask and life will be much better.

only rubber used is possibly with the hose end couplers, but most are now going to silicone and all couplers used are silicone (humidifier tank etc.). They also make hoses with silicone ends. You can try soaking them as mentioned, turning your machine on for a hour or two so it airs out.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

The base of Vicks Vaporub is petrolatum (Vaseline) and can damage your mask. Any petroleum products; including things such as Vaseline, Chapstick, some cosmetics, and moisturizer, can damage the soft parts of your mask.
