Hissing sound - mask leak or mouth leak - waking partner

Post by Ado » Mon Aug 11, 2008 10:29 pm

Hi all,

well its been two months on and have had good nights and bad nights. still trying so hard to sort out a mask that doesnt leak or cause my nostrils to be rubbed red raw.
anyway, ive got a new nasal mask by Fisher and Pykal and everything was sweet until about 1:30 am this morning when my partner awoke with a fright saying that a hissing high pressure sound was coming from me. apparently i was sleeping through it and she had to wake me up. she kept asking me how could i sleep through the noise?

so the question i have - i didnt feel the mask was leaking as this would normally wake me up - could the hissing sound be coming from mouth breathing?

I can address this from the bed partner's perspective since my hubby's had a machine for five years and I've only had mine for less than two weeks.

I have often awakened to hear my husband's mask leak and he's got no clue. Even if it's a big one. I have to wake him up and inform him about it.... Before he got a full face mask, he did mouth breathe, but it never produced the high pitched whine and/or high volume of air that a leak did. So I think you may be getting used to the sound (a good thing for you, but not necessarily a good thing for your partner).

Be sure to clean the mask daily and be sure your face is perfectly clean before bed. This will help to ensure a good seal that will last the night.

Same thing Brenda said--squeaky clean face (no moisturizer) and squeaky clean mask!

Which mask? If you're not mouth-taping, it could also be coming from you.

Do you have a tendency to "hiss".....

I've found a pillow firmly placed on the spouse's head will stop most offending noises.

Especially if they are poking you all night claiming YOU are making the noises!

I learned this trick from my Mommy.

I don't know if this will help, but when I went up a size in nasal pillows, it eliminated chafing.

Hi Ado-

A good indicator of mouth breathing (or LEAKING) could be dry mouth in the mornings - do you have that? My partner said that when i was mouth leaking the sound was really loud (basically ALL the pressure was going right through my lips). And I slept right through it.

Same with mask leaks - slept right through it.

Could she see if you were leaking from your mouth (yeah, hard to do at 1am I realize) ?

Do you have a data capable machine?
