How much did you pay for your recent sleep study ?

Post by mymontreal » Tue Aug 12, 2008 1:02 am

Curious how cost varies around the country

I had 2 recent studies - one was an initial split-night study and the second was cpap titration study.

Each overnight study was billed to the insurance at about $6500.00 - luckily the insurance covered 90% of this, but it still ended up costing me about $650 out-of-pocket for each overnight study...

Holy Schmoley!!! WHERE ARE you? I'm in mid-Michigan, the out-state Detroit area.

My 2006 CPAP titration was billed at $1650, Medicare allowed $850.27, Medicare paid $680.22, my secondary insurance paid $170.05.

My 2008 sleep evaluation was billed at $1850, Medicare allowed $765.04, Medicare paid $612.03, my secondary paid $153.01.

My 2008 bi-level titration was billed at $2000, Medicare allowed $840.12, Medicare paid $672.10, my secondary insurance paid $168.02.

Now, neither of these were done in a hospital-based sleep lab, they were done at a stand-alone accredited sleep lab. I have heard that hospital-affiliated sleep labs are more expensive.

I haven't seen a single bill for either of mine or for my equipment yet. I'm kind of scared actually......

I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield Teacher Insurance and it's okay, but not great. I'm waiting for the whammy when I find out what I'm responsible for.

I also have BCBS teacher insurance, in New Mexico, and my ins was billed 2800, which they paid immediately, I noticed. Due to choosing the "high option" insurance, higher premium but more stuff covered, I did not have a copay for this It was at a stand alone sleep lab, split night study.

I have a high deductible plan. The hospital billed something like $3,200 for each night, but the allowable from insurance knocked that down to $1,311 for each night, which was all out of pocket for me. Between this and the CPAP machine, I met my deducible for the year. Hmmmm.... what esle do I need done?

Mine was free...
One of my customers is a sleep lab. They needed a guinea pig to test some new equipment.
I was that pig.
In order to get a base line on the equipment they did a regular study for free.
The director just told me today to let them know when I wanted to try a new mask or needed hoses. the sales reps practically give them away.

I had my initial sleep study at a stand-alone sleep lab, but one that is associated with a local "health system" that has a hospital. (Not sure that's well explained, but I'm not sure what else to say. It's Multicare in Tacoma, for you other Western WA people. How would you describe Multicare?)

Anyhow, they billed almost $5800 and Tricare allowed $652 and paid 80% of that. I have a Tricare supplement which paid the remaining 20%. I'm glad I wasn't paying cash because I can't really afford $5800!

This is a very interesting discussion. I knew costs would vary from place to place, but I'm amazed by the differences.....

Yay! A question I can answer!

I had my sleep study done at a hospital's sleep lab. My insurance company paid $3,392 for my first sleep study, out-of-pocket, I'm supposed to pay $651. The cpap tritaion, insurance paid $4,335 and I'm supposed to pay $481............yeah, like someone else said, I think I've covered my deductible. I'm getting anything else I can think of done this year.

Wow, I feel pretty lucky. My 2 studies were billed at about $1200 each. Insurance paid about $850 each and I only had to pay a $30 co-pay for each study. In addition, my machine and mask/hose/filters (one new mask/hose/filters each 6 months) is completely covered - no co-pay or deductible for me.
