It is possible to get off CPAP - myth or not?

Post by midnight_snorkeler » Tue Aug 05, 2008 4:03 pm

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea back in july 2005. my weight was pushing 270lbs at 6'1". I originally started at pressure of 15cm2. When i first started i thought my eyes were going to pop out of my head! - Just recently I went in for a retitration test because I was sleeping horrible again! I currently weigh about 235lbs and my new pressure is now 9cm2. There is hope! Although I do like my cpap! - Lose weight and give it a shot- It definitely won't hurt! I do dream of dreaming without cpap though!

Congrats on your lower titration pressure and your weight loss.

President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.

I am working on weight loss too and hoping my pressure will go down. I have heard that you can get of cpap totally sometimes but that most people just get to lower settings. In my own case, I have been very thin and fit and still had OSA symptoms at those times in my life. Looking back, I think I have had it since childhood. Alas, no sleep studies to confirm or disconfirm.

Good luck.

There is a certain level of obesity that causes hypoventilation, and people need cpap for that.

Some morbidly obese people need less pressure when they loose weight, and for some, they may come to lower weight where they no longer need it. Happens after bariatic surgery for instance.

Others people, no matter what their weight, will have to use cpap all their lives.
