CPAP Info for DME

Post by WifeIsHappyNow » Wed Jul 16, 2008 11:39 am

So, I just got a new mask from a new DME. I got my CPAP machine ~2 years ago from DME A. I now have different insurance and got a new mask through DME B last week.

I just got a call from DME B asking for my CPAP make, model, serial number, and who I got the machine from. When I asked why, they said that they require that information so that they can bill my insurance for my new mask since they are supplying the mask. They also said something about wanting it on file in case I have a problem with my machine, they will know which manufacturer to contact. I asked why I couldn't just provide that information if that happened in the future and they got a bit defensive saying they were just following corporate policy and that it was required.

Is this common practice for DMEs?

To bill insurance for CPAP supplies you have to include this information on the claim for some insurances in order for them to pay. For example BCBS requires us to have that information on file. It would be an insurance requirement, but not a rule.
