Meticulous Cleaning Essential for CPAP
One common complaint among CPAP users is that they get sinus and ear infections. They are more likely to suffer bronchitis than the general population. The constant mucous surplus created by your body in an attempt to fight against infection can be almost as disruptive as the sleep apnea that CPAP is designed to cure. These infections are the result of exposure to the micro-organisms that breed on the mask and hose of the CPAP machine. With daily use, the CPAP machine can host a dangerous menagerie of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that feed on the skin, mucous, and oils from your body that accumulate on the mask.
Then, once these populations have been breeding all day, the CPAP machine becomes a delivery system that pushes them inside your body. The positive airway pressure makes sure these micro-organisms are forced throughout your otolaryngal cavity. The inside of your ears, your throat, even your lungs are all seeded with a breeding population, making it highly likely that the populations will take hold. This is made even more likely as a result of the drying of your mucous membranes that can be a side effect of CPAP treatment.
To avoid the dangers of the CPAP machine, it is essential that you maintain an impeccable cleaning routine for the mask and hose. It is often advisable that you have several sets of hoses and masks so that you can rotate them and soak them in an antiseptic solution between uses.
Another option is the use of oral appliance therapy, which not only fosters less in the way of bacterial and other micro-organismal populations, but is easier to clean, and, even if it becomes populated, does not give these infectious disease organisms a free ride into your lungs. Most people prescribed CPAP therapy can actually get as good or better results from oral appliance therapy, without this health-threatening side effect.
To learn more about how oral appliance therapy can be healthier than CPAP, contact Dr. Ira Shapira at the Snoring and Sleep Apnea Treatment Center today.

It would have scared me a bit but have not heard of that many complaints on the board about these problems.
I would say that most of us do seem to be cleaning our equipment enough to prevent those nasty critters from making a home inside us!

I guess if you have the title of "Dr." in your name, you can say just about anything and get away with it.
You'll get far more germs off of door knobs.

Maybe "Dr. Rooster" should write a paper on how CPAP rejuvenates your sex life and that's the secret behind millions rushing to their doctor saying they aren't getting enough at night! Let's hear it for "Hose Power"! Just ask them where they think all that air goes anyway.

I dunno...I used to get upper respiratory infections at least once a year, and haven't had one since starting CPAP. Maybe it's the filtered air all night.
Maybe CPAP should be recommended as a preventative measure against chest colds.

slinky - my momma's motta was "a little bit of dirt never hurts".. to build up your immune system that it!
The world has gone hygeine crazy, personally, I think. No wonder superbugs are everywhere!
That said, I *am* enjoying a cleaner CPAP now that I'm cleaning it more frequenjtly (but not obsessively!)

Well,
Since starting Cpap, I have had no colds, no allergy problems, even though my co-workers have been beset by both. So, I will just keep doing Cpap, and enjoy the benefits of breathing clean filtered air every day. Everyone else is entitled to there own opinion!!

Hello Rooster and All,
I read this and could not believe what it was saying until I got to the end, It is obviously propoganda to convince people that CPAP is dangerous for their health, instead they should use an oral device.
I have no problem with them encouraging people to try their device, but I do not like them attempting to scare people who are trying to get used to the CPAP routine.
I also saw this on that page below the article:
Disclaimer: Chicago, Illinois Dentist Dr. Shapira's website only provides information on sleep apnea treatment, sleep apnea appliances, sleep problem remedies and on the prevention and cure of snoring in Gurnee, Kenosha, Lake Geneva, Milwaukee, Racine and Chicago, Illinois. This information is not to be taken as medical advice.
So that means, take it with a grain of salt, and only in these areas. That means I am safe in Virginia.
Karen
And I think to myself...... What a Wonderful World
