Hi everyone,
First, I would like to say hello and hope everyone is in good health! I have recently been diagnosed with apnea and have had a CPAP for about 1 month. I am really struggling adapt to the device and wondered if anyone else struggled when they first started. I usually lay in bed for about an hour before I fall asleep, but wake up an hour or two later and take it off because I can't fall back asleep. I was wondering how long it took some members on the board to adjust.
Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

There a few other "Cornshuckers" on the forum. (I grew up and spent my first 25 years in the eastern part)

Please fill in your profile with all of your equipment, pressures, etc. and feel free to fill in any more details that'll help us answer your questions.

Getting started on this therapy can be a little daunting as it isn't all that easy to learn a new way of sleeping.
BABY STEPS!
At some point, you won't be able to sleep without it.

And don't forget: you have a local DME supplier getting paid to provide, not just your equipment, but also education, support and advice. AND a sleep doctor who got paid to determine and order adequate CPAP therapy. If they don't know you are having a problem they can't begin to help solve it.

Thirty day intervals is perfectly adequate to determine how well you are doing, whether you are experiencing any improvement - or problems - and then its time to "bug" the local DME or the sleep doctor.

I bugged my sleep doctor every 30 days until "we" got my therapy right. My local DME supplier was a sheister and I soon bypassed them. My sleep doctor was a pretty good guy so he bore the brunt of my complaints. And he was good about making adjustments and suggestions as needed.

If he wasn't I would have dumped him. With a copy of my scored data reports from my sleep evaluation and CPAP titration, a copy of my script and a fully data capable CPAP my family doctor and I, along w/this forum, were perfectly capable of solving any further problems.

By all means, share w/us what brand and model CPAP you are using. ESPECIALLY if you have had it 30 days or less!!! We can then make better suggestions to help you out.

Here's some links that will help answer that question:

http://www.freepatentsonline.com/5167580.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nebraska_Cornhuskers

A "corn husker" was (from early agricultural days) a device or a person who removed the husks (the leaves covering the ear of corn) from an ear of corn when it was harvested (removed from the stalk). This evolved to the nickname for the state of Nebraska to the "Cornhuskers" and the name for it's athletic teams at the University of Nebraska.

Cornhusker,

Welcome to the forum! In addition to the other suggestions, I would encourage you to click on the Yellow Light bulb and red dot at the top of the page and look through the articles contained there. Lots of help and wisdom there. Also, can you be anymore specific about what is causing you problems? Is it adjusting to the pressure or pressure changes, mask discomfort, sore spots, water in the hose, hose management, congestion, dried out sinuses, cold or tickly feeling nose, or something else? Any problem you are having, I guarantee someone has had it too. Keep on trying!

Hey Everyone,
Thanks for the welcome! I chose the name Cornhusker because I am born and raised in Omaha, and the only thing we have interesting in the state is what USED to be a good college football program. Anyway, I have the Remstar Plus humidified model with the C-Flex. The setting is on 9 for my machine, and I wake up feeling as though I can't get a full breath. Also, I have always been a very light sleeper who will wake up to the sound of a pin dropping, so having the CPAP is a challenge. I was thinking of asking my doctor for a sleep aid to help me out for about a week or so. I took the week off from the CPAP because I am really sleep deprived, but I know that is not good because I am having apnea episodes with chest pain and sweating. Thanks for the advice and I will have more to post. Hey danmc, what state is a sand groper from?

We have many fine members from all over the world on this forum, so be prepared to do some "Googling" at times if you don't understand something.

SAND-GROPER = Person who lives in the state of Western Australia.

If you've only been on CPAP for about a month, depending on your insurance provider and your equipment supplier (DME), I would urge you to try to upgrade your CPAP to the M Series Pro model. It's fully data capable and will be able to tell you how your therapy is going. The Plus only has compliance capabilities (number of hours slept).
If you're "renting" this machine for a few months before it's purchased, you should be able to swap machines.

Snoredog,

It looks like he/she selected the wrong machine for the profile. In this post it is stated that the "Plus" is the machine he/she got stuck with.

Cornhusker,

To highlight something that Snoredog said, if you're using your humidifier in heated mode, turn it off. I KNOW how hot and humid it is back there this time of year and MORE heat and humidity just won't help keep your nasal passages open.
