DOWN WITH PICTURES!!

Post by neversleeps » Tue Jul 05, 2005 5:00 pm

It seems from the previous "anti-picture" post, the vast majority who responded do not care to see all these equipment pictures (machine, mask, humidifier, software) at the end of each post. However, being able to read the information in a single line of text is pertinent to some posts.

To accomplish this, first eliminate the pictures from your profile. Those pictures can easily be replaced with one written line of information regarding your equipment, IF you feel that information is relevant to your post.

I guess I'm not sure why anyone cares what someone else's equipment LOOKS like. Its kind of like preferring a child's picture-book to a book with words. For instance, with the software; isn't it just plain silly to be looking at a picture of a disc? Keep in mind, if you want to see a picture, you can always go to cpap.com....

As an example, if my equipment was pertinent to this post (which it isn't),
this is where it would appear:

Thanks for all the PMs! I appreciate it very much and I promise I'll keep trying!!!

Ok, folks! Remember you can remove your equipment pictures from your profiles and just write the words!

All my pictures of equipment have been removed. Sorry that the new feature irritated you, Neversleeps. I had no idea it would be such an annoyance or I would never have incorporated it in my posts. Fortunately, I don't post often so hopefully you will forgive me for whatever annoyance and irritation I added to the forum.

Oh dear, I haven't meant to offend you felineperson3. I brought this up in a previous thread, click on:

PICTURES ON OUR POSTS

and as you can see when you click on that link, I received replies from many others (such as: rested gal, momexp5, Yoga, ozij, IWannaSleep, ahujudybear, etc.), who agreed they found the pictures equally annoying. I even continue to receive encouraging PMs to continue my quest!

I apologize for offending you! Obviously it is I who should ask that hopefully you will forgive me for whatever annoyance and irritation I added to the forum.

And I too must apologize for starting this whole controversy by asking whether these thumbnail images didn't gobble up too much bandwidth. Funny, I only had one or two replies. Maybe folks don't understand?

As I, non-techie, understand it, a website such as this has a certain amount of predetermined "airspace" (bandwidth) in which to operate. This is usually determined by the type of site that it is (dialogue vs. artwork vs. gaming), expected traffic (usage by us) and the site owner's pocketbook.

Other sites I participate in have had problems when the expected usage increased far beyond expectations or people posted too much graphic content (Tons of oversized emoticons with motions) or the owners and participants created games that exceeded the allowed bandwidth.

Now, posting the emoticons is usually no problem for folks, unless they are using very old dial-up or web-TV connections, but adding more pics (remember that the site carries ALL of those pics in ALL of the threads) might cause problems for them even getting the site to open, in addition to pressing our luck with bandwidth for the entire site.

Does that make sense?

Well, as a newbie to CPAP I've found the pictures with links to be helpful. Notice that the people that find them useless (from neversleeps' list) mostly have hundreds of posts, ie, experienced people.

As a sysadmin professionally, plus being stuck with slow, slow dial-up, downloading them hasn't been a problem. For example, the avitars that no one seems to have problems with are about the same size as the equipment pics. The icons at the top (Message Board, CPAPopedia, etc) are two to three times bigger. No, they won't "crash the site" as some people seem to have concerns about. The worst that would happen would be if a picture were to not be on the server and you would get a broken link icon.

Finally, if our hosts were worried about the bandwidth they take up, it wouldn't be offered.

That all said, I've removed the pics from my profile so as not to contribute to the problem.
