I found cpap machines on craigslist.org. I wonder how long they will allow it. Until then, if you need one, this would be the place to get it inexpensively. Find the area you live in or near, and then use the search function toward the top left side of the page.

I purchased my humidifers (a Fisher and Paykel 100 and the 150) from craigslist. The came from California and I live in Missouri. Best way to find the great deals are to do a google search by typing cpap craigslist.
Many people are willing to ship if you pay the postage fees.

I bought two machines through craigslist.
The first question I asked when I inquired about the machines (and I inquired about a lot of machines) was (and I quote):
Then came the machine. Absolutely REEKED of smoke and perfume, likely Febreze or some other attempt to cover the smell.
Finally the seller then replied:
So I filed a complaint with PayPal which they denied because they only investigate allegations of "non shipment" not "quality of goods". So much for their "Don't use your credit card, we give you buyer protection." Fortunately, I did use my credit card anyway.
Soooo, should I dispute the charge on my credit card? It will probably cost me my PayPal account, and will probably cost her account as well.
Anyway, back on point which is that craigslist is filled with slimeball scumbuckets and you should buy locally and inspect merchandise before you pay for it. You should NOT buy stuff for shipment with money you can't afford to lose. eBay's rating system and member longevity really ARE worth something, but they generally don't allow prescription machines to be sold.

the first machine was fine, I bought it locally and put my hands on it before I paid.In every inquiry, RonS wrote:Has this machine ever been used in a smoker's home or anywhere a smoker has been?
, came the reply on the second machine.Seller of machine 2 wrote:In reference to the first question about the smokers no it has not been

The seller never replied. So I tried againan annoyed RonS wrote:I thought I had asked if the machine had ever been used in a smoker's home?
The machine reeks of cigarette smoke, and apparently a perfume of some sort to try to cover it up.
All of the clear rubber parts are yellowed from smoke. The filters are filled with brownish yellow tar.
It reeks of cigarette smoke and of perfume of some sort. I cannot use the machine at all.
I cannot breathe that stench. I specifically asked you about it, and you lied. That's fraud.
The result of the transaction is the same as if you had shipped a brick, or even nothing at all.
You are going to need to refund my money and I'll ship the machine back to you.
I ordered more than $100 in additional parts from another supplier based on your assertion that the device was smoke free.
I'll eat the loss on that, maybe I can reuse them on another machine, but you're going to have to return the money I have sent to you.
Finally the seller then replied:
It wasn't cedar chip smell, it was cigarette and perfume. There is a hidden internal filter inside the machine and it was soaked with tar, and while the black filter was changed the "white" fine filter was brown. The UMFF she tossed in (with a ripped hose, BTW) smelled so badly that it stunk up my three car garage. As far as Anyone smoking around the machine, I am sorry but No One smoked anywhere near the machine, nor in My home. All smoking was done Outside as we have a baby here so henceforth no one is allowed to smoke in the home. The grandkids have asthma and breathing problems.. The cedar chips were put in due to The dog and cat smell , as we had 5 cats in the house at one time- hence forth, I put them in there to eliminate the animal smell and to keep it fresh during storage. Not try and MASK anything, nor to attempt any kind of fraud.
So I filed a complaint with PayPal which they denied because they only investigate allegations of "non shipment" not "quality of goods". So much for their "Don't use your credit card, we give you buyer protection." Fortunately, I did use my credit card anyway.

Ron - GOOD ADVICE!!!
I would never buy a used machine via shipment. Period. Possibly local pickup, but never shipped.
It's just too much money to throw away on a potential moron/liar.
Sorry for your experience. You might try re-selling it on cpapauction advertising it as a perfect machine for a smoker.
Cheers,
B.

I have purchased a few things from craigslist but only if it was local enough that I could travel to see it first.
I have learned that everyone doesn't have the same standards when it comes to clean. I have sometimes been thrilled because someone understated how nice something was but I have also been disgusted by others.
I would never buy for someone to ship from Craigslist. I don't even spend big money on things from Ebay unless I am thoroughly convinced I am not dealing with a shyster. ( I have been burned there before too)
The Paypal thing is a real joke too. They have NEVER helped me resolve a problem and make it very hard to even file.

I guess I am just too trusting. I purchased my Fisher and Paykel humidifiers from craigslist. I am in Missouri and they were shipped from California. Great deal and well worth the money I spent.
Paypal has specific rules you have to follow. If those rules are followed, in my experience they have been great to work with on a couple of snafus I have had with bad sellers. I have purchased a bunch of stuff from eBay (I have over 1600 feedback both as a seller and buyer) and have only been disappointed a couple of times and those were on cheap items that didn't cost hardly anything. I know for myself if I need or want a high dollar item I can save money buying from eBay and paying with Paypal. The most expensive I have purchased was for $350.00 and the most expensive item I have sold went for $725.00. Some things should NEVER be purchased from eBay and are usually scams, those auctions I stay away from.

I was gonna say "NO!" then I was gonna say "YES!"sleepycarol wrote:I guess I am just too trusting.
We're in the same boat just your chance paid off, and mine didn't.
I've sold lots of stuff on eBay, my largest transaction about $1,500.
I've never been burned buying (or selling) on eBay. My first experience buying long distance on craigslist.... Not so much.
Oh yeah, actually it was kind of my third machine bought on craigslist: The second machine I "bought", the seller and I came to an agreement, then an hour later he "sold it to someone at work," but as a consolation I could have the humidifier for free. (I'm sure he simply got a better offer from another craigslister)
I guess some people have a hard time living with what they just did to someone else... but they do it anyway. For what, an extra $25 bucks maybe?
I guess they almost have a good conscience.
whew, I appreciate you sharing the paypal experience. I was feeling pretty trusting of them, I never buy much auction stuff, and I never do Craigslist out of my state or within easy drive into the neighboring three states, but I do use paypal for a lot of places online.
I will have to be careful where I shop...
very greatful

In my opinion, it depends on how much you paid. If it was a lot of money, I would absolutely dispute the charge.RonS wrote:Soooo, should I dispute the charge on my credit card? It will probably cost me my PayPal account, and will probably cost her account as well.
I have had great luck with eBay & Paypal both as a buyer & seller, but if a lot of money was a stake and someone clearly screwed me, I wouldn't hesitate to risk my accounts and start fresh.

Depends upon how much you are talking about.
If you only paid (using this only as an example) $20.00 or so for the machine if it were me I would relist it and state that the machine has obviously been used by a smoker and condition and put a price on it close to what I had paid. You should be able to recoup your money without too much hassle.
If on the other hand you gave a couple hundred dollars for it (again only an example) then I would probably dispute it.
I had one instance where I sold (on consignment) an old Civil War sword. The owner gave me the information on it and I wrote the listing the way he had it. He is a Civil War buff and should know his stuff as he deals with it a lot. Sold the sword for a little over $200.00. He was disappointed it didn't bring more but it was okay. Sent the sword to the buyer and he had an absolute fit over it. Said it was a fake and not a very good one to boot and wanted a refund. I promptly refunded his money and had him send me the sword back. Once I received the sword back I again relisted the sword with the original description and a small blurb about the orignal sale. The second time around the sword fetched $500.00 and the buyer was VERY pleased with it and stated it was authentic. SO which buyer was right?
Who knows you might try listing on cpapauction and receive more for it than your initial cost (if you can afford to take the chance).

Hmmm, sorry to hear of the bad luck stories. My purchases in 1996 & 1997 on Yahoo auctions were all great except 1 machine but seeing as it was only $11 I had no complaints about how it stunk.
It appears to have been retrieved from a burnt down house & nothing, not even stripping it to bits, scrubbing them & then leaving them in the sun, could eliminate the burnt wood smell (Hmmm maybe it was a smokers machine & they tried putting it in a smokehouse to disguise the smell )
But I was interested in it because it was a genuine museum piece (an old PB318). The blower in it was one similar to the motors in vacuume cleaners but despite that it is surprisingly quiet.

You know, I'm laughing from a reverse experience. I just sold something on Ebay for $150. It's twice what I paid for it. And I was shocked it went for that much. AND I had to ship it to New Zealand.
I was so worried that the buyer would holler when she got it, and demand a refund, or claim she never received it. I spent weeks worrying. It finally arrived, I got positive feedback that she loves it, and I'm SO RELIEVED!
Best of luck to everyone!!!!!

Oh, that's Tillicum, WA. Don't move there. Just pickup the XPAP, and drive away, with your windows rolled up, and your doors locked.
Of course, your seller may be a registered sex offender, and, if so, would that cause you nightmares?
Sorry.... I gotta laugh to keep from crying about my own town...
