After night with Cpap. Finding breathing is different in am

Post by ReedRichards » Mon May 12, 2008 8:41 am

After a good night with the CPAP, I notice that when I start my day my breathing is a little different. Right before I get on the treadmill in the morning, I'm finding that my breathing has changed a little, like without the machine, it's night as good.

Does breathing change because of all of the air going in at night?

Any thoughts?

In what way has it changed?

Like I need the mask back on. I wake up with a tired feeling, a little groggy. I have these mild periods of shortness of breath in the morning. I can't seem to figure this out. Last night, I woke up twice and was groggy the 1st time. It was like brain was upset that it was interupted.

Hard to comment on the shortness of breath. If your up and around for a while and you're having shortness of breath, I'd call the Doctor..not the sleep Doc but your GP.
Otherwise, tiredness could be cause by leakage, pressure change requirement etc..

Let me restate,

I felt like a headache and I felt groggy. I feel like I was yawning quite a bit in the morning.

Is it my body getting use to the machine? Am I not getting enough rest? I still want to embrace and not give up because of one bad night.

Any advice

What do you consider a "good night with CPAP"? Waking up with a headache, groggy, and yawning a lot makes me think that you're not getting good therapy (insert standard disclaimer here that I am not a doctor and didn't even stay in a Holiday Inn last night!) Do you have a data capable machine? Do you know what your AHI and your leak rate is? I think I'd start there to figure out what's going on.

Reed,
If you haven't had that machine long... this is yet another reason to get a fully data-capable machine. Your Plus... is not one, you'll need at least a Pro to get all of the data and be able to tell what the problem could be.

Has anyone ever told you that your mouth falls open when sleeping? That's a very common thing with OSA (one you can't know about on your own) and if it's the case, you're going to lose all the 'good' air unless you wear a 'full face' mask (it's not face covering, just nose plus mouth) or use special tape overnight to keep your mouth closed. Your symptoms definitely sound like you have apnea - untreated.

I've got the plus, I'm battling with the insurance company to get me the Pro. Great feedback. I hope it's not a leak or something else. I want to get the most of my therapy and don't want to quit it.

My sleep doc recommended against the ff mask if possible. HE said the ff tends to require higher pressures than nasal masks. I tape and find it works quite well for me.

I had a better nights sleep last night. I did not feel as groggy, I felt I got about 6 hrs sleep. If things get bad, I'll tape my mouth shut. Boy but was I on the verge of quitting. I won't quit it.

Your doctor is an idiot. Presuming you have your mask selection set correctly in you machine and you have a machine that has leak compensation (and you do), your machine will deliver the required air pressure.

I wouldn't call him an idiot Den. I think reading between the lines, he was getting to the fact that he feels that the tendency for leaks with the ff masks are somewhat greater than nasal masks and thusly, when one who doesn't check their efficacy numbers...(as most of those on cpap still do not), a higher pressure tends to be required if one is consistently leaking. Given this...from what I've been reading...people have tended to struggle a little more with ff masks than nasals..re. the leak factor.
