Just wanted to drop everyone a quick note to say that I'm recovering well from yesterdays surgery to correct my deviated septum.

There is not a lot of pain at this point. My throat was really soar yesterday from the anesthesia tube (I think). I was out of the surgery center around 10 am. There was some nausea but nothing too serious. I took the good drugs (Vicodin) most of yesterday to stay ahead of the pain but started taking regular meds today.

As far as the procedure, the Pillar implants in my soft palate don't hurt at all. I can eat normally without pain. I can already breath pretty well out of my nose even though it is bleeding a little. I have to wear this ridiculous looking mustache bandage to catch the drainage from my nose. I can't even tell there are splints in there. My face is a little swollen. I'm only supposed to eat cold foods for two days. I slept in a comfortable lounge chair last night with my head elevated. I've tried to get on the computer to read email but seem to get dizzy pretty quickly.

Overall, I think I'm doing better than I expected and shouldn't have any problem returning to work next week as long as the recovery continues at this pace. I get the nasal splints removed on Monday so my best guess is I'll return on Tuesday. Bottom line is very little pain so I think it was a good decision. I will keep you'll posted.

Yes, the doc recommended taking a full week off before returning to work. Right now the slow oozing from the nose is the largest annoyance. The pain is pretty mild actually as long as I avoid touching my nose.

Hello. I had septoplasty, turbinate reduction, and what my doc calls a "window" installed about 6 years ago. I had surgery on Wednesday a.m., went back on Friday afternoon to have the packing removed. My parents came to babysit me from Wednesday - Friday. I was lucky enough to have 2 weeks off paid. I could have gone back to work 2-3 days early, but didn't.

After the surgery, I wasn't in terrible pain, but was just very uncomfortable due to the packing (like tampons up your nose) (sorry to be gross!). I did take my pain pills as prescribed, since I didn't want to have to "catch up" with any possible pain (I am a pathetic wimp). I had to sit up to get any sleep for a good 7 - 10 days due to swelling and drainage. On day 5 I did try to go to the grocery and was a little light headed. The doctor said this was normal.

Again, it wasn't that painful for me, just very uncomfortable. After the packing was removed, I used a saline rinse at least 3 times a days to get all that goo out. I think it helps the healing. The best part of this surgery, when I blow my nose, stuff actually comes out. To this day, I still am amazed.

I am still very pleased with the outcome. Best wishes! Remember, healing takes time. My motto: be sure to take the pain pills - you can always go to rehab if necessary:).

Titrator,

Will you have splints or packing?

11 days post op

Post by sintpa » Thu Apr 17, 2008 3:36 pm

Its been 11 days since by septoplasty and Pillar procedure. I am nearly fully recovered. I'm breathing great out of my nose. I am performing saline flushes twice a day with a saline flush kit. I have a little numbness in my upper teeth which per the doc was caused by a lot of bone work he had to do near that region. The Pillar is almost completely imperceptible except for a little numbness in my upper soft pallet. So far I'm very happy with the results. I think I'm sleeping better but won't perform another sleep study for 2.5 months.

My doc performed an inferior turbinate reduction on my during a rhinoplasty to fix an old hockey injury to my nose (never had any breathing problems). Now its 4 months later, I have missed 50% of work and my entire life has been placed on hold. I was an extremely active guy up to the sugery. I belive my doc erred badly in judgement and it can happen to you, be very careful. My doc didn't even explain the procedure to me, all he said was it will help you breath better after the surgery - sounded pretty simple, now I'm screwed.

Very sorry to hear that. I rarely say this, but get a good grievance lawyer. Go for some major bucks! The f!@@#$$ a$%^^ should not get away with that.

Unless there was something very unusual about your case you should not be having these problems.

I had all six turbinates reduced and a double deviated septum corrected. This was on Tuesday morning and Friday morning the splints were taken out and I went to lunch and shopping with my wife. Monday morning I was back at work full time.

Hi Hosemec,

Sorry to hear that you are having complications with your surgery.. I am one month out from the inferior turbinate reduction as well as a septoplasty and other sinus issues. I am completely healed and doing fine. I did get a secondary sinus infection after about the 3rd week. The procedure was more painful than I originally thought, but I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Hi Titrator & all,

I had my turbinate reduction on deviate septums on both nose during teenage years ago. The chances of having it grow back can be high as I had second surgery after 10 years or so. If one gain weight the turbinate may grow back and I can feel on my right nose at time it is blocking but this is adviceable to exercise to clear the blockage and loss weight to reduce the blockage. You may want choose get one side get it down forst instead of both as emtpy nose syndrom can be a painful thing.

Hope it helps.
