Bed Pillows - Pillow Talk requested!

Post by qrlylox » Sat Jun 18, 2005 5:22 pm

I hate to ask this - but can some of you "old timers" give us newbies some tips on pillows (bed pillows)? I can't find one to suit.
I've already spent too much on all this gear, and dropped almost $90 for a pap-pillow that i can't use.
Maybe I'm using it wrong? I put my shoulders into the curved part, but then that arm that comes out hits me right in the face and pushes my mask out of place. What am i doing wrong? (I got the large size pillow).
I also have a tempupedic curved type and can't use IT because its too low (I have large shoulders). Sigh.
I have been looking at the regular tempur pillows but am afraid it will be too low also.
I've heard some recommend the memory cluster type - but won't they be too soft?
It SEEMS like a fairly thick, but solid pillow would be the ticket - so your face can hang off the edge?
OR - is a soft mushy the best, so it kinda mushes around the face and mask?
Are there better pillows for mask users, and better ones for nasal pillow users?
Someone suggested finding the pillows thread, and I searched and sat here for almost an hour and found just one thread on bed pillows - all the rest are for nasal pillows.
I'm afraid I'm going to spend a weeks pay trying to find a PILLOW now that works! Holy messing around trying to get comfortable so we can SLEEP!
Can we rehash old ground and get into a conversation about pillows?

If you click on this you'll get the Pillows thread.

Of course, my own favorite is the "shapeable" pillow from Target. When it is fluffed it has enough loft to be supportive, but your head sinks into it without it compressing noticeably and it seems to hold the mask/ air pillows in place. (and it's relatively cheap!)

I tried many pillows and ended up with the Tempur-Pedic (curved one). I too have large shoulders and at first it was uncomfortable. After sticking with it for two weeks I wouldn't give it up. It works with all my masks. I always thought I needed a "high" pillow but it turns out they are not too good for spinal alignment.

I have both PAP pillows and they are not bad but you have to keep the mask hanging off the edge. I can actually put my face into my Temper-Pudic. You can also hang the mask off the edge of the Temper-Pudic if you prefer.

I also tried buck-wheat husk pillows and a variety of other foam type pillows. Spent months and many hundreds of dollars before I found one to stay with. Between pillows and masks I have spent a sizeable piece of change on my OS hobby. Refine your search and you should find a lot on bed pillows.

I took Judy's advice and bought a shapable pillow at Target. I'll give it a try tonight.

I also took Ahujudy's advice and bought the shapeable pillow from Target for like $12.99. So far I really like it and hope it stays the same after months of use! I sleep on my side with the nasal pillows.

Alright! I just ordered two shapeable pillows (thought hubby might like one too) from target online. We shall see! In the meantime, I'm going to try and stick it out using my tempurpedic and see if i end up loving it like Newsgrouper.
Thanks to everyone for responding!

I like the temperpedic also -- absorbs the hoses without crushing them.

I just bought the shapeable pillow from Target via my American Express Membership Reward Points (3,352). No out of pocket expense!

meister,

Did you use the pillow you suggested back in the old days when you had to use a mask? Did you sleep on your side with your mask? Does this pillow absorb the mask and hose without causing it to shift or get squished?

I'm so envious you have been able to get off CPAP! I'm waiting anxiously for my appt. to see if I'm a good candidate for the Pillar Procedure and/or dental device... but in the meantime I am also in search of the best pillow.

Yes I show and breed them, have several.

I believe you are the third person on this board who breeds/shows dogs! Rested Gal has her Rotties, if I remember correctly. And for some reason, I have Janelle in my mind as another breeder. ??

So....is there a link between breeding dogs and sleep disorders?
LOL

Maybe someone should get a study going.

BTW, love the pic of your crested. I have only seen them on TV. I am the proud owner of my first ever dog in my whole entire life. For my 50th birthday my husband finally caved in and bought me a Shih Tzu. Charlie is our empty nest baby, the son we never had. If I could ever figure out how to reduce size and put a picture here, it would be of Charlie. He is much cuter than I am!

I forgot to mention that I went to Target today and bought two of their shapeable pillows, too. I thought my husband would enjoy one also!

Will report soon on my experiences.
