Is this funny or what?

Post by sharonious » Thu Jun 16, 2005 7:13 am

Saw sleep doctor (pulmonologist) yesterday. I "innocently" asked if he is comfortable with set pressure level on bipap when my 3 sleep studies within 4 months were so divergent (1st, severe; 2nd none; 3rd moderate). He said, no, but doctors look at things this way: if they can help a patient 80%, they have helped. If I am having trouble with pressure, they can give me an apap--on loan--for a week to monitor. Funny, huh? He doesn't recommend apap because he is "not sure of its value" but will use it reset pressure, which might just need resetting again the next week, but he won't recommend it to adjust pressure on an apnea-by-apnea basis. So funny and typical from what I've read on board. Still, I am compliant (6-8 hrs. a night, all hours sleeping) and how does he even know since he didn't ask to see the card from the bipap machine. Ha, ha.

Which BiPAP are you using and what are your settings, if I might ask?

Why can't you monitor the machine you have?

I'm using the GoodKnight 425 at 12/3 (12 IPAP, 3 EPAP).

sharonius,

Unbelievable!!!!
....He doesn't recommend apap because he is "not sure of its value" but will use it reset pressure, which might just need resetting again the next week, but he won't recommend it to adjust pressure on an apnea-by-apnea basis....
Its like saying, "You are permitted to check the thermostat in your house to see if the temperature needs to be adjusted, BUT you may only check it once every couple weeks. You are NOT to look at it on a daily basis."

And then he didn't even check your card for your stats??? All I can say is, thank god for apaps and thank god for cpaptalk.com!!!!!

BiPap Pro2 with bi-flex set at 12/3. I am not having any problems with the settings at this point. I just found it hysterical that with apnea that changes when it good-and-well-feels-like-it that the doctor is comfortable with helping patients 80% worth. And if the Big Apnea (just a joke) comes during that 20% not covered, who cares except me and mine. No wonder youz galz/guyz recommend apap.

I would say, if these next steps don't make a significant different (trying the auto for a month and then putting your back on new pressures) then i'd get copies of everything he/she has done and get a second consult from a new doctor.

Melody,

That is why I have the name "Sleeping with the Enemy", OSA is the enemy that tries to kill me every night, if I don't wear my APAP

melody's apneas

Hi Melody,
Why are you still having apneas, while on your machine. Are you on an Auto or a Continuous Pressure? If you are on continuous pressure, have you gone back and told your doctor that you are still having apneas? Is it possible that your mouth is coming open in the middle of the night or your mask is leaking terribly which will cause you to still go apnic? Also, do you have OSA only, or did your sleep study show that you are having Central Sleep Apneas? Are you snoring? Having long apneas while on your PAP machine means it's not doing the job it needs to be doing.
