I know someone who said they were unaware moisture was under their humidifier as they couldn't really see back in it easily. Then they found it had a buildup of mold both in and under the humidifier. They use tap water.
There have been a few times I've been away or out of distilled water, so I microwaved tap water then let it cool. Did the vinegar soak before going back to distilled, and had no resultant problems. Seems so many I talk to use straight tap water and think nothing of it, some even seem like they are hearing about distilled water for the first time.
My RT told me if I ever saw mold in my humidifier to call him and he would drop me off a new one. Said once they get mold in them that it's hard to totally get rid of it, and he'd rather replace it.
Come to think of it, I'm gonna check back inside my machine and make sure there are no hidden surprises back in that cave.
