Angry, grumpy, agitated, and irritable

Post by Hunter1 » Mon Jan 28, 2008 9:48 pm

These words describe my life most of the time. I am tired of hurting my family, friends, and co-workers. I am tired of feeling out of control.

I have struggled with these issues for years. I know these symptoms are from a lack of sleep because when I have a very good night of sleep, I am a very nice person and see the world in a very different way.

Cpap has helped but I am not where I want to be.

I have not seen much discussion of these topics on the forum. Am I the only one who struggles with these issues?

It is possible that not all your irritability was due to a sleep deficit. When you experienced good sleep in the past and were much nicer during the day, was there anything else about those days that may have assisted in the good feelings?

I know when I got my therapy going it made a huge difference, but I didn't go from Bubbie the terrible to flowers and butterflies. It got better but stupid people still irritate me to no end.

Being angry, grumpy, agitated, and irritable are pretty common side effects of poor sleep and sleep apnea.

I certinaly have the same symptoms when my apnea is not well controlled. I expect others here do to.

Maybe people here can help you get your treatment working better for you?

Sounds about right. I've spent a lot of time trying to convince the family that I'm not grumpy, and they're just being difficult. Seems that they might have been right all along. And no, it's not sorted out yet, but there is some improvement. And also some understanding from their side as to why I'm like that, so they cut me a little slack. Only a little though. And not all that often.

Would it make sense that our body's need time to re-adjust to breathing though the night?

NO you are not alone. I just got my machine today. I have been a misery to be around, especially lately due to lack of sleep.

I also take an anti-depressant which helps with these issues.

I cannot imagine how awful i would be/feel if i were not on the anti-depressant.

Anyway, maybe someone here can help you with your machine settings or ?

You are not alone...

Boy, it's great to know how many other grumps there are out there.

I have various reasons (apart from a naturally loudly obstreperous personality) -

I'm a chronic depressive (for which I take pills - but which causes me severe anger management issues);

I'm a Type 2 Diabetic (controlled through diet and exercise - I HATE exercise, and always have, and I LOVE all the wrong foods - and this makes me REALLY grouchy, especially when my blood sugars get out of whack);

I have a bad back I got working in shearing sheds in my younger days (and the pain makes me grouchy);

I have an enlarged prostate (which makes me go to the toilet all the time, which makes me grumpy, especially as I am a teacher and hanging on in front of 25 adolescents and trying to make sense and control a class is a real bugger);

I have had five major abdominal operations in 2 years (and the anaesthetic really knocks me around, making me constantly tired and grouchy); and

of course I have sleep apnea (and you know what that does).

I am constantly tired - the cpap treatment hasn't led to the remarkable improvement I had hoped - but I have so many other reasons for being knackered all the time. The problem is knowing which is the major causative factor, or whether it's just a mixture of them all - and what one should do about it!

So, don't worry that things haven't improved as quickly as you would wish - but I strongly suggest that you also see your doctor, just to check out whether there are any additional causative factors that might be to some extent negating the effects of your cpap treatment.

Regards, and all the best,

GrizzlyBear

hunter you are not alone, i can be the psychotic bitch from hell on occasion who is just mean and angry. i originally thought it was just my depression and chronic pain, but have since found it was the OSA as a major contributing factor. since being on the machine for a whole 2.5 months , i have been told by spouse and friends, they no longer wish to run and hide as often as they used to when they see me coming, so thats a good thing

i have found that there has been certain medications that make me really angry as well. in australia they treat fibromyalgia (which i have) with Endep aka amytriptalline (sp?) this makes me an utter angry maniac. i refuse to take it ever again. there isnt anything else that i am aware of like you have to treat this in the US. endep is an old style tricyclite antidepressent. if you are on any meds you may want that reviewed, especially antidepressants, SSRI's like prozac or zoloft and their ensuing cousins can do this as well, but not to the extent as the older style meds. trazadone is also a big offender of making people cranky (been there done that one too)

when i get into one of these mood phases i pull a greta garbo "i vant to be alone...." i watch dvd on my computer or read weird websites like mentalfloss or neatorama and just escape for a bit.

good luck and hang in there, we know how you feel

PS Grizz-great to see you back!

GVD from the very wet tropics watching my lawn chairs floating in my front yard at the moment in 98degree heat....

That's caused by apnea? I must have been suffering from it for far longer than I realised! With no end in sight either...

I feel your pain Hunter. I've felt this way for years. For me, the daytime sleepiness is so bad and it makes me so moody. Struggling through each minute of the day is very difficult. I was just dx with osa this past Nov.
Still having mask issues but holding hope that this treatment will help with the moodiness. Hang in there. Ihope you start feeling better. Hugs, Sososleepy
