Your $.49 box of salt may be just fine. I pay around that much for a one pound box and there's nothing in there but salt--I read the label. It's Morton Canning and Pickling Salt. On the front of the box it says "Plain Salt, Nothing Added", and the label only lists "salt", not aluminum or anything else. Salts that are billed as Salts for Neti Pot use are usually finer grain, so that they melt faster. I have no trouble with the Morton. I start with my water just a smidgen warmer than I want it to be. I add the salt to the pot, add half the water, swish it around a few times till the salt is totally dissolved, then add the rest of the water. I choose not to add baking soda, though many folks do. It works just fine for our family.
Good luck to you!

Neti Wash
After reading these posts, I read ingredients on the box of salt that I bought. It is not pickling or canning, but Morton's Plain Uniodized salt. And has only two ingredients: Salt and Sodium Silicoaluminate.
Looks like it does have aluminum of some sort in it.. I have never read salt ingredients before! Guess I can mix it with my regular salt for cooking , I will compare the Pickling and Canning salt and the price to the Sea Salt. (Always looking for "more for my money" deal... )
Thanks Le_wif, I did not look at the Canning salt when I purchased, but will when I go back.

More for your money...
I completely understand and agree! You'll find that a one pound box of salt goes a long, long way in your neti pot.... For the benefits, it's one of the best values around!
Just be sure to keep it in a container with a nice tight seal. Those additives in the other salts keep it from clumping up, and canning/pickling salt has none of those additives. Not that it's such a huge deal to break it up a little if it gets clumpy...
