While this could make us more aleart in the short term, it doesn't address the repair that normal sleep brings.
It would have use in places where you have to stay aleart, but for everyday use instead of healthy sleep, no.
You can't throw a pill at everything, despite what the drug manufacturers want. Jim

We are a society that wants a pill to fix everything. Yet, after a time many of the so called "safe wonder drugs" have some very unpleasant side effects that weren't initially known about.
Our bodies need sleep in order to repair itself and without that needed rest our bodies will take a toll -- and at what price?
I can see a select few drug pushers having a field day with this drug.

Papdaddy love the monkey!!
My daughter's ex mother-in-law raises monkeys -- oh they are so cute -- but can have a vicious streak in them!!
Maybe they are sleep deprived and have OSA!!!

Yeah, I think I'll stick with actual sleep rather than snorting a chemical (though this might be handy for driving long distances!).

You're getting sleepy . . .

Hey, for those of you with pets, you might want to get them the PET scan to make sure they are getting good quality sleep .The study, published in the Dec. 26 edition of The Journal of Neuroscience, found orexin A not only restored monkeys' cognitive abilities but made their brains look "awake" in PET scans.
Interesting article. I don't know much about narcolepsy, but unless there's another viable treatment this will be good for them. I'm convinced it would be bad news for others trying to skimp on sleep regularly. There's just too much complexity in the different cycles of sleep and what goes on during them that we don't understand. I'm sure a single chemical would not be a good thing.

If you had a job to do that falling asleep could be a life and death problem, it might be a short term solution. I've seen times I'd have done that, rather than take a chance, most people aren't put it that position, and the rest of us count on the fear factor and luck. Jim

When I was in college I got 3 one hour naps and a single two hour nap in a five day period. No drugs, coffee, or any other ingested anything. Just lots of focused work. At the end of it I was toast! Fortunately I did not need to do any driving or similarly dangerous activities during the entire time.
I guess I was just preparing for sleep apnea later in life.
Now I am a bit older and I like to think wiser... I'll take the sleep, thank you.

Traveling sucks... Traveling with CPAP blows.
I'd rather be diving, then it is a good thing to breathe through your mouth.

Even sleep deprived I don't think I've felt that bad....Doc offered some drug at last review (provigil???)....Declined. Don't think I'm quite that desperate yet....
Better living through chemistry......
Have to agree with Goof.....if it ain't life or death, why???? Gimme sleep!!!!

Wars arise from a failure to understand one another's humanness. Instead of summit meetings, why not have families meet for a picnic and get to know each other while the children play together?
