Do You Read in Bed with your Mask On??

Post by Robin_ » Fri Dec 21, 2007 6:19 pm

I see lots of comments on the forum (and even in the product challange that recently finished) about being able to use a mask while wearing eye glasses is a desireable trait. For the life of me, I can't figure out why that would be so.

When I go to bed, the first thing I do is prepare my mask and then hang it on the bed post. Then I get my book and read until I'm sleepy. When I'm ready to fall asleep, I take off my glasses, put on my mask, and go to sleep. Wouldn't everyone who reads in bed do it the same way? Why would anyone want to read, or watch TV, with a CPAP mask on. What am I missing here?

Robin

I really can't relate to that scenario, either.
There are no TVs or reading materials in our bedroom. When we go to bed, it's to sleep (or other extra-curricular activities).

I guess old habits die hard. I have read myself to sleep since I was a child. Today the only time I have to read is just before bed. So, what I do is read 'til I'm tired, put on the mask and read a little more. If I am not ready for sleep in about 20 minutes I take off the mask and try it all again later.

Falling asleep while reading means my mind doesn't focus on the mask or any of the other stressors that make up modern life.

Different strokes for different folks....

I don't read with my mask on either. When I put my mask on, it is sleepy time only.

Just like Robin, I read before I put my mask on (while my humidifier is warming).

Then the mask goes on, and I go to sleep.

There's no T.V. in our bedroom (not allowed--my wife used to stay up late watching it, and keep me awake), and even if there were, I wouldn't dream of watching T.V. with air blowing in my face.

I always put my mask on when I go to bed and watch tv. I fall asleep very quickly, sometimes I wake up and my glasses are still on and I am still propped up in bed. If I didn't put my mask on first I would spend many nights without my cpap.

Hmmm, that comment begs the question... Do you wear your mask when engaged in the extra-curricular activites?

Depends on whether or not there is a partner.

Like most whose responses I've read, I don't put my mask on until I'm ready to turn out the lights and go to sleep. Can't really figure why anyone would put their mask on sooner for TV/reading. What's the point of that?

when i went for my titration, they had me put the mask on, and told me i could lay there and watch tv for a while until i "got used to it" and felt like laying down and trying to sleep. well, since the mask they gave me was NOT glasses compatible, i had no choice but to read....

since ive had the machine at home, i also have been putting the mask on, laying down, and reading while its on. i am so used to sleeping with it on that of course i get very ready to sleep soon after i put it on, but yes i do read a bit with it on in bed. before i slept with it i would read and then just reach up and flip the booklight off and not have to move, i think having the mask on helps keep this routine, i dont have to move bunch of stuff around and get comfortable again...

guess im a weird one too

If I have to get up during the night, it's nice to be able to put on my glasses. I could do without them, but if I want to see what time it is, I have to have my glasses on. I usually do want to see what time it is so I can decide if I should just get up (say it's 1/2 hour before my alarm goes off) and use the time, or if I should just go back to sleep.

I do have a cheapie, ugly pair of glasses that are big and fit easily over the mask. I keep them on my nightstand.

Actually, there is nothing really weird about reading in bed.

My husband puts on his mask, lies down and falls immediately asleep.

Now that is weird!
