Clogged Ears!!!

Post by Dolphin » Mon Dec 17, 2007 1:59 pm

My ears have been clogged (or feels like it) since early december. I have had my ears shringed on the 7th and again on the 14th with little relief. Everything to me sounds muffled and when I talk, it's like I whisper. My husband asks me to speak louder but to me I already sound loud. I heard sometimes this can happen when using cpap machine. I havwe also been putting olive oil drops in both ears to help loosen any wax if any there. Other than going to emergency to see ear, nose, and throat doctor is there anything else I can do? Candling is not an option as based on studies, does not work and can cause damage to ears. Thank-you

You should see an ENT ... that's just me though as I like to listen to music and on occasion also to people I talk too

Its hard to know if you have wax or if its more internal. When you say "shringed".....do you mean you had them irrigated? Has anyone looked in your ears with an otoscope?
Sounds like you have congestion further in. Does something like sudafed help? How about mucinex? Are you drinking lots of water?
I agree, its time to see an ENT doc.
My ENT said that if CPAP causes eustacian tube congestion, its usually from a sinus problem.
I wouldn't be using the olive oil, it can go rancid.

Who is doing the "shringing"? Do you mean irrigation with a syringe?

If it isn't an ENT-it is time to see one. Stop the oil!

How long have you been on cpap? It is not uncommon for users to feel like their ears are plugged, however it is not normal. This can also be a sign of cpap air pressure entering cavities of the sinus it should not. If this is something just recent, it could also be the sign of a common cold coming on. Be careful having your ears over irrigated. We need some wax in our ears to filter out the anything foreign that flies, crawls or is blown into our canals. If you are in fact coming down with a cold, it is recommended to not use the cpap for a few days until you feel you can tolerate it again. You should start to notice a difference in your ears! See your ENT for further evaluation!

I haven't used olive oil since getting ears shringed (irrigated) the 2nd time and based on your replies, will not use till I can get to see an ENT. I will call tomorrow to see how soon I can get an appointment or I may need another referral from family physician. In any event, that will be my next step.

PS: I forgot to mention I did have tubes in ears twice so maybe that could be another option.
Thank-you to all who replied, it was very helpful.
