What are Hypopneas? I know that the only stupid questions are the ones that you don't ask, so I am asking this one. I know that Apneas are when you stop breathing, are hypopneas when you wake up? I have never really understood this. And I don't know how to read my info on my machine where the AHI/HYP index is...all help appreciated...

Joyce,
A hypopnea is a reduction in breathing, either by partial airway obstruction or a slowing of the breathing rate. I don't know if there is a standard definition, but what I've seen is that air flow has to be 50% of normal for at least 10 seconds in order to call an event a hypopnea.
Can't help you with finding your information on you machine - I use a different brand.
Good Luck,

Thanks Sleepy and River Dave, that is a big help. Now, I need the software to determine what is ap. or hyp. No $$ for that yet...I have just been assuming that the Ap/Hyp index was apneas...oh well, after only 3 months into this, I guess I am doing as well as can be expected... Gee, Sleepy, you only got a month over on me!! wow.... guess we can learn a lot together... lolol....

Thanks Den, this helped tremendously! Guess my sleep-deprived brain missed this one too....

jsmythe, I don't really have a month over you now because of my septoplasty surgery on Nov.20, 07 ! I'm not supposed to wear my mask for 6 weeks at least but have sorta snuck and tried it twice and my nose is toooooo sore to tolerate all that strong air so by the time I get my cpap therapy back, then you might be a week or 2 ahead of me !jsmythe wrote:Thanks Sleepy and River Dave, that is a big help. DEFINITIONS:
APNEA = cessation of airflow for 10 seconds or greater.
HYPOPNEA =>50% decrease in airflow for 10 seconds or greater with a decrease in oxygen saturation of >3%.
APNEA/HYPOPNEA INDEX (AHI) = apnea plus (+) HYPOPNEA/hour of sleep.
RESPIRATORY AROUSAL INDEX (RAI) = AHI +snoring related EEG arousals/hour of sleep.
AHI/RAI** Scale =<5 events /hour = (none); 5-15 events/hour = (mild); 15-30 events/hour = (moderate); >30 events/hour = (severe).
Respiratory related sleep fragmentation: Sleep arousals due to respiratory events or snoring.
Desaturation = Drop in O2 oximetry distribution saturation by 3% below average saturation.
SaO2 scale: >89%=(none); 85-89%=(mild);80-84%=(moderate); <80% (severe).
EPWORTH SLEEPINESS SCALE =<10=(does not indicate EDS (Excessive Daytime Somnolence));10-15=(indicates daytime somnolence-not excessive);>16 (indicates EDS).
RESPIRATORY EFFORT RELATED AROUSALS (RERAs)=Sleep Arousals due to respiratory events characterized by pressure flow limitations in the airflow indicator channel without significant O2 desaturations.
StageIII and StageIV are combined and referred to as Deep Sleep.
Sleep Efficiency = Normal is >80%
As established by AASM/ABSM 1999
