DME is hustling replacement parts

Post by msteve » Mon Nov 26, 2007 7:49 pm

My DME insists that, as a matter of hygiene, I should replace my hose every 6-12 months. I wash it out periodically, rinse thoroughly, and let it drip dry. It's not cracked or deteriorated in any way. Can any of you think of a reason the hose needs periodic replacement? I don't exhale through the hose after all! And the replacement hose doesn't appear to be as well made as the original.

It pays to have a spare for everything, however replacements are not as well made as OEM. My hoses come from Targa "SP"m and are poorer and smaller. Thank's Lincare!!! Jim

I can't think of any reason to change a hose unless it springs a leak for some reason. Oh. I forgot. To increase the DME's profit and make the cost of insurance increase for everybody. Yeah. That's it.

Well, I certainly don't mind having a spare. But I think Rainsux has the DME's motivation figured out.

Until 2007 Medicare would replace a hose once a month! In 2007 they changed that to one hose every 3 months. Every 6-12 months sounds reasonable to me. Pooh happens. My cat put a puncture in one. So at 13 months into therapy I just recently threw away my first hose and started using my second hose. Plastics do get brittle over time and the replacment hose does seem flimsier and even more brittle than the original. This one "crackles" when I move it around whilst making the bed and hanging it over the bedpost or whatever.

I've been using my hose for over a year and a half, never wahsed or rinsed it, and it looks and works just as good as the day I got it.

The only hygiene that matters to the DME is keeping the wallets clean. As Jim said, it is good to have one or two extra only for emergency back-up.

this constant DME bashing is so below the group and so silly. If any of you owned one, you'd go broke.

Just keep driving Guest .. just keep on driving, far away if you will. You have never offered anything of value (or even silly) to this forum and only whine about DME bashing.

I would suggest that you fasten a piece of white gauze to a straightened coat hanger, run it thru your hose, then see if you can look at it without throwing up.

My pulmonary doctor was very specific about not using a hose two nights in a row, simply because they don't dry out and that provides heat and moisture for mold growth. There are always mold spores in the air and all they need is moisture and heat.

I rotate six hoses and NEVER use a hose two nights in a row
No need. As I said, my hose is as clean and functional as the day I got it ... as in squeaky clean ... just like my humidifier reservoir ... squeaky clean. My bedroom and house may not be sqeaky clean but clean nonetheless. If you want to see a picture of my CLEAN nose, I'll see what I can do about getting you one (a picture that is) so you can show your pulmonary doctor.

BTW - Sorry about your mold problems, but the climate is not the same all over the world as it is in VA. Maybe you just need to clean your bedroom once in while so that you don't have those problems ... or need so many hoses
