Pillows

Post by ahujudybear » Fri May 27, 2005 6:41 am

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to tell you about some pillows that I have discovered.

As a new user of a night-time breathing device, I was waking up during the night with sore ears and sore head from the head harness pressing against my ears and my ears and head pressing against the harness against the pillow.... so I went SHOPPING!!!

And I found the softest pillow ever. It's like a big marshmallow <LOL>. I found it at a Target store and it's called a "shapeable" pillow. The loft is provided by "cluster fibers" of foam (i'm thinking maybe something like "memory foam"?) At any rate, it is so soft that my ears don't hurt, yet so supportive that my neck doesn't hurt either. My head sinks into the pillow without the usual compression into a hard biscuit <LOL>

The only drawback is that it does have to be thoroughly fluffed each time you use it.

Just had to tell you about it!!!

(It cost $12.99, but that might have been a mistake because the receipt calls it something else.)

I think the viscoelastic memory foam pillows are the best for us with SA. They are so pliant that you could put a large nut and bolt on it, lay down on it and you will not feel it. So masks do the same. However, and I am in this business, you will not find the real deal for $12.99. If it is under $40.00, it is not the real thing. But as is so much else, it is suggestive.

Can you tell us some brand names of quality viscoelastic memory foam pillows. I have tried foam, therapedic, down & polyester combos, PAP pillows (large & small), and good buckwheat husk pillows. I don't really find any of these comfortable. My pillow bill is second only to my mask bill. This is a very expensive hobby.

Number one, Tempurpedic Swedish system, also most expensive. Two Boyd Specialty, Three Hickory at Home. These are a few, name brand mattress stores also have good ones.

well, i guess I am in the minority here (as usual ) because I don't like memory foam, per se. I have weak neck muscles and other places too, and once I sink into the foam it becomes difficult for me to change position. I can do it, but it takes more concentration and effort than I want to use when I'm sleeping.

I tested a mattress once while out with my co-worker. She loved it! I had to have her help me get out. I couldn't move. (I have to roll over onto my left side to sit up and had made the mistake of lying down on the right-hand side of the bed.)

Although I have been thinking about trying one of those 3" matress pads...

I don't at all "sink" into a Tempur-Pedic pillow. It is a pretty solid material that shapes itself around your head and face but is not nearly as soft and "sinkable" as many other pillows.

I find the talalay latex pillows and mattress far superior to memory foam products. Love mine!

Newsgrouper?

"shapes itself around your head and face" is what I call sinking in. Once the foam has done that, it becomes an extra effort to change position.

Where does one find the "pap" or "talalay" or other pillows?
Are they terribly expensive?

No I have not tried the PAP pillow, it is a specialty item that can only be found at CPAP.com and a few other internet sights. Since I toss and turn so much, I don't think they would be for me anyway. I do great with the viscoelastic memory foam ones.

Okay, I'm pillow challenged. I have very bad allergies and like a fairly firm pillow. Do the memory foam pillows fit a standard pillow case? Do they lose some of their ability to mold to your head if put in an anti-allergen pillow cover? The only reason I wonder is because I know the cases are pretty air tight. Do the memory foam pillows work well for side and stomach sleepers? I wear a FF mask and get a lot of leaks when I end up on my stomach and am wondering if a foam pillow would be better?

Thanks.
Sue

Hi ITeach,

Yes, Visco elastic Memory foam pilloes will fit in a standard pillow case. They come in sizes just like standard pillows, twin, full, queen, and king. You can put them in anti allergy cases and not lose the attributes as long as it is not very tight so make sure it's sized. They are excellent for side/stomach sleepers. I am myself so I can speak from experience. I suggest going to a store that carries Tempurpedic, the number one brand and they are everywhere. You can try out and see for yourself. They have several different models to choose from. These are also the most expensive but worth the price or after finding the one that works for you, you can shop around for cheaper prices, just don't go to Walmart and expect to find the same thing for $15.00. There is a reason that Tempurpedic is $100.00.

Memory Foam Pillows/Mattress Toppers.......

Post by gailzee » Mon May 30, 2005 6:54 pm

4 Mos. into APAP world, one of my complaints is constant back and neck problems from sleeping on my back (I am a side sleeper). No matter what pillows, positions or whatever's I tried, no dice, still discomfort.
Watching QVC (and no I do not work for them..) I watched a segment on bedding, and was interested in and bought the 3" memory foam mattress pad and 2 memory foam pillows. The mattress pad on top of my firm mattress has been quite comfortable and less aches/pains. Neck and head in the foam pillow has taken some getting used to. Point being, it would be a cheaper way to
try the memory foam than the expensive mattress, which I know is very comfortable.

You can always try the memory foam pillow first to see if you get adjusted and more comfortable, and then a change for the bedding after............

Just a suggestion. One thing I do notice, that instant success in growing comfy with a hose/mask tethering one to a machine, is difficult in itself, I've learned to try and be patient. I get 6 hrs of sleep with my apap, and no more. But 6 hours on the machine, and NO SLEEP MEDICINE, and a plus
and one thought of the probability of how many yrs I was sleep deprived pushes me nightly to strap it on, forget the discomfort and sleep.

Who said sleep comes easy!

I Teach,

Please also put your post on the TalkaboutSleep message board. Frankly, I prefer the cpap pillow because it is lightweight and not as heavy as the foam pillows and the foam just doesn't feel good to me. The cpap pillow is easy to push out of the way when getting out of bed - particularly for people with back problems. The cpap pillow unfortunately does not come with a allergen covering. It was made by the a couple of the folks at TalkaboutSleep and has an irregular shape so a regular allergen pillow would not work with it.
