Power Failure

Post by Niteair » Sat May 21, 2005 6:54 pm

My Wife and I woke up this morning within a few minutes of one another, I noticed that her alarm clock was flashing 12:00. I wasn't very concerned since we sometimes have momentary outages, a second or two. Later when I downloaded and viewed the data on Encore Pro, I saw that the night was split into two parts, part one from 9:10PM 5/20/05 to 1:06 AM 5/21/05 and the second part from 1:11 AM to 7:30 AM 5/21/05. Both of our machines are set to start automatically (as long as there is power), neither one of us woke up during the time the power was out, however we both now understand the feeling mentioned here about being foggy, and tired all day. I had my Active nasal mask on and my wife had her Comfort gel nasal mask on. Neither of us are mouth breathers, however I'm sure we did so during this time, but like I said we both felt bad all day, so I plan on installing some type of alert on the outlet serving our CPAP equipment.

Howdy,
I know how you feel. It happened to me. Never again. I now operate my GK420E from battery power. A charge usually lasts 2 weeks. I was switching to battery whenever a storm was in the area. I just keep it on battery now and charge when it gets to 55-60%. Takes a few hours to fully charge and its no problem. Just push a button and go to work. When I return its at 100%. If you have a Resmed it is more complicated and less efficient but it still works. The 420 really is a power miser.

The Remstar has it's own alert - if you set it up not to start automatically.

Might want to consider buying an Uninterruptable Power Supply, like used for PC's. They can power a PC, Monitor and several accessories for quite some time, plus they have audible alarms to let you know the power is out.

My quess is they would power a Cpap for quite a while, but you can calculate it yourself by reading the wattage rating on the CPAP and seeing how many watts the power supply can deliver for a continuous period.

And the best part is they aren't very expensive.
