Ironed out the hose problems

Post by JZ » Sun Oct 21, 2007 5:59 pm

I just got back from a four-day business trip. I stayed in a nice hotel, but was puzzled about how to arrange my cpap hose up overhead. (At home, I run it up over my headboard, but here the headboard was attached to the wall.) I had read one person's post about putting their suitcase by the bed, extending the handle and attaching the hose to the handle.

I didn't have that kind of suitcase, but looked around the room for something similar. I noticed the ironing board, and bingo. I put the unfolded ironing board upright in the little space between the bed and bedside table. I ran the hose from the cpap up over the top of the ironing board. It worked perfectly. Of course I moved the ironing board every morning because I didn't want the hotel maid to think I was nuts.

I used a plastic bag roled up and made into a loop slid between the headboard and wall to hold the hose.

I'm a newbie (less than a week).

I don't understand why the hose has to be elevated or attached to something?

I have my CPAP on my nightstand, and the hose (I think it's 6-ft) goes down just about to the floor, comes back up over the edge of my bed and goes into my face mask. Do I need it elevated or hanging or something?

Thanks.

I use 3M Command product hooks/hangers when I am forced to sleep in a bed other than my own.

I too route my hose over my head since I tend to toss from side to side and back to front (like on a rotisserie). At home, I have a window over my bed and no headboard. So I have strung a piece of 18 gage insulated wire across the window at an optimal height. My hose is attached to a plastic key chain with a piece of Velcro (gotta love that Velcro, second only to Duct tape for MacGyver engineering). I then hook the key chain (which allows for vertical movement) onto the wire (which provides horizontal movement) and it’s like having someone keeping the hose in the right place for me all night long.

When I’m not at home I just place an adhesive hook/hanger (3M Command product) centered on the headboard or wall above my head. It stays in place for the night then it comes off easily when it’s time to leave.

It doesn't have to be hung up

Some people have trouble with the hose when they toss and turn. They prefer to route the hose above their head. I can use it either way. It's all about your preference.

Smart impromptu solution, JZ!

Great pics of your 3M rig, DreamStalker!

For new cpap users, here are links to some more hose hanging arrangements:

If a person is an active sleeper -- turns over a lot -- hanging the main air hose overhead can prevent wakeups from hose getting under you or tugging at the mask. Can also lessen the chance of mask leaks springing out because of...hose tugging at the mask.

When figuring out a hose hanging rig, think of being like a fish on the end of a slack line. Able to turn over and over without the hose wrapping around you or...hose tugging at the mask.

Yes ... the fish analogy is good. I'm hooked on this hose that's for sure.

Thanks for the information (and so fast, too!)

As far as I know, I only roll from one side to the other a couple of times per night, and as long as the hose doesn't get caught on anything (it hasn't so far) it seems to move with me just fine without pulling on the mask, which is probably why I didn't understand why people where hanging theirs overhead. Also, all my equipment is brand new, and everything might not work as smoothly when it gets a bit older, so I will keep the "hang the hose" idea in mind.

Deb,

The hose arrangement also depends on what mask you are using. Why don't you click on the Profile button at the top of the forum page and fill out the information about what machine and mask you use. Then if you have any questions or concerns about your cpap therapy, it will be easier for others to respond based on your specific equipment.

On both of the masks I use (ComfortLite II and Aura), the hose goes up over my head. If I don't hang the hose, I find that it does not move easily with me and will be a huge bother and keep me awake.

Welcome to the forum!

Truly appreciate the answers here. I've used cpap for 10 years. However, I'm looking for common sense ways to make the ordeal more comfortable

Heaven knows my sleep specialist is no help.

Thanks for bringing this outta the "archives". I think the ironing board solution is a fabulous trick when on the road.

Thanks!

And I am doing a lot of reading!

The last 2 nights I've used a hose hanger and slept better for it.

As well, I've been cleaning my mask with a cpap wipe sold locally. Kind of like baby wipes....

Still looking for a good supplier in the Toronto Oakville Hamilton area.
