two masks, big difference in results

Post by hosehead5150 » Thu Oct 11, 2007 9:25 am

I was given the mirage quattro full face mask size large after my titration study, Prior to this i was using the mirage ultra ff medium sized mask. With the large quattro, no matter how tight or loose the straps are, i get leaks at the corner of my mouth area. THe medium usually stays leak free although its about 4 months old already.

So to get something i could live with, I bought the hybrid mask, I could not get it to seal and be comfortable enough to keep on for more than 2 hours, it just hurt the upper lip area of my jaw. So then i got the soyola full face mask, size large and my ahi went from the 10's to 2.7, the only issue is that the cusion is rather hard and gets a bit uncomfortable. I wore the soyola for a week, last night i couldn't deal with the "weight" of it on my face and put the quattro back on. my ahi went from the low 2's back to 10.5....

both masks had leak rates of 0.04 l/s so what is the difference in the masks? the soyola gives me better numbers than the quattro, the only difference i can see is the actual mask. any ideas as to why?

As far as the way i feel, the soyola makes me fell great, i.e the low ahi, but the comfort factor is killing me... what to do what to do....

I am just rambling here one bad nights sleep ya know?, and to get to the point, how can i make the soyola be more comfortable? i am using a resmed vantage, my pressure is set to 9.6 to 18, my average pressure is 16. i do use the settling feature so i don't get false hypoapneas before i fall asleep....

Why didn't you just have them replace the Large Quattro with a Medium size one? (or keep using your UMFF?)
I've been using my same UMFF for 2 1/2 years......no sign of wearing out, yet.

the resmed masks cut the bridge of my nose, so i had to try something, plus to keep a seal i have to really crank them down, the soyola doesn't seem to need to be cranked down

I have my top straps very loose and they've never even come close to hurting any part of my nose. All my tension is on the lower straps.

Whatever.....

Nope!

Whatever........you want to do is just fine with me.
It's your therapy. Not all masks work for everybody, regardless of how they're sized or adjusted.

Hosehead,
(Love that name). I'm new too and used the mirage liberty with the nose pillows. I had no problem with seal, but it felt like someone was blowing up my nose (like a balloon). And after a couple nights my upper gums hurt. I traded it for a mirage ultra. (These are full face.) I'm not crazy about that either, but at least my nose doesn't feel like it's growing bigger each night.

Hang in there. I'm in the tree next door.

Can you tell something about quietness of Soyala? Is it a quiet mask?

Soyala seems to retain more CO2 than other masks, for me that seems to completely eliminate the central apnea I've had, machine takes care of the rest.

Using my 420e I can switch masks like back to the UMFF and I can count the number of CA's seen. Go to the Soyala they all disappear.

Your results may vary, but it is quieter because its exhaust rate is lower and they have the BEST exhaust design of ANY mask I have ever used. Exhaust is so well diffused 360 degrees you cannot feel where the air is actually escaping.

Don't over tighten the straps on the Soyala, wear it loose, I have a goatee and my leak rate with that mask is the lowest I've ever gotten.

The Full Face version can be an uncomfortable sucker if you get it too small.

My opinion: The exhaust on the UMFF was much better than the redesigned Quattro. Those tiny square holes they went with are much louder than even the old horse shoe exhaust.

I didn't have any problems with the Quattro sealing, but I prefer the old UMFF over the Quattro, the forehead pads didn't pop out of the holes trying to put the thing on, the elbow didn't leak like a sieve. That Quattro was noisy as hell for me, I wouldn't give you $.29 cents for one.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Just curious: if your average or 95th percentile pressure is 16 why is the low end of your pressure range set at 9.6??

Are you getting 16 cms as the 95th percentile of pressure w/both masks?

my pressure is at 9.6 now, it was at 12. my ahi's were staying in the range of 10 - 12, so i started experimenting by lowering the pressure a little each week, atr 9.6 with the soyola ff mask, i am at an average of 2.7 ahi, with the quattro i average 5 AND UP

I do get 16cm with both masks as well. I put the soyola on last night and this morning my ahi went from 10.5 yesterday to 3.9 this morning, i didnt shave so my leak rate was a bit higher than normal. If i wear the mask loose as someone suggested, it seals fine if i lay on my back and stay still, the moment i roll over or turn my head, it leaks between my lower lip and chin, so i crank it down until the leaks stop, which makes the mask feel to tight....
