Need help on making decision on new mask.

Post by IBJammin » Mon Oct 08, 2007 4:07 pm

I have been on cpap since April of 2007. I am having problems with the 2 mask I have right now. It is time that insurance will allow me to get another one and would like to find one that works for me this time. The mask I used at my sleep study was a Respironics Optilife in which I did pretty good with. When I went to the DME to pick up my equipment they did not have the Optilife and so I decided to go with a Comfortlite 2 in which I had read some pretty good things about it. I started off really well with it at first but it got to the point I was getting these bad sores in my nostrils. I switched over to the simple cushion nasal interface that came with it but could not keep it from leaking. I went to my sleep doctor recently and after explaining my situation, she gave me an Ultra Mirage full face mask since I am a bad mouth breather. I am still working with it trying to get it to stop leaking air. I have tried the suggestions on this forum about how to get it to seal but it still leaks. I think it may be due to my long slender face causing it not to make good contact. I don’t know if maybe the Quatro would fit me better or not but I am about to my wits end now. I know from reading some of the post on here that with some people it may take a while and a lot of mask to find the right one. I figured with some of your expert help, it might help me to narrow it down quicker than on my own. I would like to find a full face mask since I am a bad mouth breather due to a deviated septum I think plus the fact I also hate using chin straps. Even though it kind of scares me, I have thought about taping my mouth shut and maybe going with a nasal mask such as the Activa or the Ultra Mirage II. Maybe one of you has been in the same situation as me. What do you experts suggest ? Right now I am not benefiting from my cpap therapy but also do not want to give up just yet. Please help me.

If your profile is correct your Plus machine even though it has a card is not going to give you data on your leak values only compliance data and you really need to see how much you are leaking. I tried taping and could not handle it. The use of Poligrip strips to stick your lips together did work for me to prevent the mouth leaks. All I can recomend is the Nasal AireII. It worked for me when nothing else would seal.

I have a long slender face too, I have a Quattro. I do get it to stop leaking, it seems what works one night, needs changing the next. I am satisfied with it though.
When I'm not sick I use a nasal aire II, by far the best in my opinion. It is not a full face though.
