Is there a good textbook that explains how to read APAP data

Post by mwink » Sun May 15, 2005 6:13 am

I am downloading data from my RemStar Auto and using Derek's nice MyEncore software. I am also carefully taking notes on some of the posts on this site. However, I still have trouble putting all the pieces together. Is there a textbook or monograph that tells how to interpret the download data? Maybe some of the people who post regularly would like to collaborate and write a guide?

Hi MWink,

To my knowledge, there isn't a text, either paper or electronic available for interpretations of this type of data. For that matter, there are very few sleep medicine schools in the country.

Sleep Techs and Therapists get their training "On the job". I received 6 weeks of hand holding before I was able to complete a sleep study on my own. But, I actually got to do a titration the very first night, supervised of course.

The best way to learn is to ask questions. There are people here who can help. Just post a question every day or so and I am sure you will get some sort of response. The key is not biting off more than you can chew. Start slow and let your knowledge build in time.

mwink, it would be nice if there were such a book about interpreting data from autopap downloads. Would be quite an undertaking, given all the variables between different patients and different machines.

Lacking such a book, I think the very best education message board readers (and probably doctors, too!) can get about the ins and outs of autopap info would be to do a search for posts by -SWS (his nickname does have a hyphen in front of it.) He is extremely knowledgeable about how autopaps in general work. Also about the differences in the way the major three brands of autopaps handle sensing airflow characteristics, responding, and presenting data.

Titrator's suggestion is very good. If you ask a specific question regarding something about a piece of data, people will probably gladly try to help you figure it out.

A book on such a subject would be cool... and awfully thick.
