whistly swift

Post by catbirdgirl » Fri Sep 28, 2007 4:50 pm

my swift II starts whistling during the night. I push on the sides, it stops, I go back to sleep.

also, it seems that I have a less good seal than I used to around the nares, because once in a while I get a leak there too.

I've only had this about 2 or 3 months. Do I need a new one?

Robin

Hi catbirdgirl,

That sounds so familiar! I've been waking up a couple of times a night --- whistle, adjust and back to sleep. Until last night ... when I woke up about 10 times with the whistling! Maybe it was the full moon!

Mine is nearing 2 months old.

I use KY liquid on my upper lip and in the lower part of my nostrils and that gets a little sticky so nasal pillow seals better.

If I get any repeats of last night, I'm going to check with my DME or sleep lab tech.

Mindy

Are you guys using plumber's teflon tape at the end that the cap is inserted? I also use a very little on the end where the hose connects; but be careful here, too much and the air intake won't swivel easily. Took care of 90% on my leaks. I had some on hand but you can get it for about a $1. I love how we have to modify these products that cost sooooooo much to make them right!

Many insurance plans pay for new pillows and cushions once a month. The pillows do get worn out, so maybe you need to get a new set. If they will pay for it, get a few new sets (one a month) so you can switch them when needed.

The teflon tape fix is something good to try, too. If you want something a little more tacky to seal the pillow to your nares, you could try lanolin. The brand commonly sold is lansinoh (sp?) and is pure lanolin. It's used by nursing mothers, so that's where you will find it in the drugstore.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will save them.... what fixed my "whistling" was tightening the top strap just *slightly* more!

ib, I'm not quite clear on how to do the teflon tape???

After 5 months, my Swift II is leaking from the headgear rings / pillows clip. I using the white teflon tape an just about every part now.

It might be time for a whole new mask.

My swift is just starting to leak a little, at the nares not at the swivel, yet. I've been using it for 9 months. I got two small pillows and one medium from my dme and have switched between the small and medium periodically which must be why mine are lasting so long.

I was actually looking for new pillows on cpapauction tonight. Maybe I should get the whole piece (pillows and short hose).

I've noticed that mine leake from the sides too, where the short hose and the cap plug in. Hadn't thought of the teflon tape....I may try that! I'm seeing my dme in a couple weeks and she said she would have a supply of the pillows for me ...I believe she said I could get two a month.
