Sleep Study Questions
Sleep Study Questions
My husband, and I now both have sleep apnea. We got a copy of his sleep study the other day and I was looking at it. I'm curious about something. It seems that neither he nor I ever got into REM sleep during our sleep studies.... Is that common? Did any of you get into REM? Isn't apnea usually worse during REM sleep? What were your numbers in and out of REM?
The apnea events lead to an arousal, these arousals can prevent or kick you out of REM.
The goal behind CPAP therapy is to keep the airway open, prevent the blockage which eliminates (in most cases) the associated arousal which allows you to enter or remain in REM.
The most restorative effects from sleep are thought to come from deep and REM stages of sleep.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
I got into REM, but absolutely NO stage 3 or 4 sleep. Go figger. Everyone's different, but OSA has pretty much the same results.

Of the hour and a half before they put me on the machine I had 12.2% rem which is about 11 min. In that 11 min In that 11 min my REM AH(RDI): 81.8, while my Total AH(RDI): 150.0. So I'd say Rem AHI in my case was definitely worse... Didn't get any Delta sleep during non CPAP time.
Of course that 11 min compared to the CPAP sleep time of 4.4 hours and TOTAL CPAP REM TIME: 1.3 hrs
