Off Topic I hate computers sometimes

Post by lilsheba » Sun Sep 16, 2007 8:15 pm

Hi all I just need to vent for a minute...I've been struggling with my computer all day, it would NOT get online no matter what I did even though everyone else in the house, on our wireless network, had no problems. Now it's fixed and I don't even know what fixed it...

Ok back to the regular xpap and sleep related talk!

Gotta love those "Windows Moments"

Nearly as bad as the car that craps out on you EVERY time EXCEPT when you take it in to the mechanic......

I know exactly what you mean! I was installing something a few days ago, and no matter what I tried, an error message kept popping up! I don't usually have many problems and that was really frustrating! Then the electricity went off for a few minutes. When I started the computer back up, it did a 'check disc', and there has been no error message since. Go figure! After I almost pounded my head against the wall trying to figure out how to fix the thing.....

Giggle, I soooooo recognize where you are coming from, LilSheba!!! Been there, done that! LOVE these 'puters when they're cooperating, HATE these 'puters when they get a mind of their own or they go down or power is lost!! Just like men, can't live w/them and can't live w/o them.

Weekend Projects...:)

Post by admiralross » Mon Sep 17, 2007 9:54 am

This weekend I was working on a few things.

1. Replaced cpu, swapped out a Celeron 331 for a Pentuim D 915.
2. Placed Celeron 331 into an old box.
3. Old box is now my firewall.

4. Rebuilt box now has Vista Ultimate running with the Pentium D. 915, 2 gb ram, 120 gb hdd and 8600 GT video. Also, there is a Virtual Box running windows 2000 sp4. 2nd hdd with stand alone xp. 3 WAN connections, 1 cable and 1 dsl and 1 vpn.

5. The firewall box I'm working on today. It will have 3 network interfaces protecting a total of 6 machines.

damn is this for a business? Sounds like a heck of a network just for home use. I have 3 machines on a new wireless network with a software firewall, and the wireless network is secured.

You're ignoring the natural desire of geeks* to play with new technology. Whether it's needed is completely irrelevant.

Doug.

*Just so nobody misunderstands I use the term in an affectionate way. I'm married to a computer geek and am a "lower-level geek," having worked in software tech support, which means I've got a higher-than-average geekitude factor. You should see our "computer graveyard" of machines that have been cannibalized.

OH I can understand the desire to play with technology trust me If I had the funds I'd have a lot more stuff than I do. But for now I just have my 3 computer network. The thought of having one computer in the house, like we used to, makes me want to cry. I'm so used to having MY machine that is set the way *I* like it. I have a panic attack when I have to get a new machine at work cause that means I spend weeks customizing so it's the way I want it.

All of this is in my house. Wireless is an entirely different beast.

Wireless: 2 SSIDs, 1 for my local and the other one is for the neighborhood to share. The local is secured with wpa2 + MAC filter, the other one is open. All wireless cards are running off of N. @ 300 mbs.

Router: Linksys WRT300N. Which I need to upgrade to the 350. I need to get my LAN to gigabit speed.

Server: 1, Windows Longhorn 2008 b3, AMD 64 X2 3400, 1 GB ram, 2 x 500 GB SATA 2 HDD. Drives are running in a hardware Raid 0.

Still need to work on is a syslog server so that all of the info the router has can send it to the syslog server. The syslog server then throws all of that info into MYSQL. I can view the stuff view the web in PHP.

And the webserver is another project.
