Why can't I sleep longer???

Post by jqp » Fri Sep 14, 2007 12:13 pm

What's the deal? I'm feeling MUCH better since being on CPAP, but I can't seem to break the 6.5 hour sleep duration mark. I tried going to bed a little earlier last night. It didn't matter... 4:00am (6.5 hours later) I'm wide awake.

I could have slept 2 more hours - and i really wanted to... but I was awake for good.

Will I eventually be able to bask in an 8 hour sleep schedule?

I'm wondering if I should talk to my doc about a light sleep aid and try to re-schedule my brain into 8 hours.....

I dunno. I'm jealous of my son who can stay in the bed for 12 hours when i don't wake him up in the mornings.

I have found since starting on CPAP that I sleep less than I did before but I sleep better in less time so I end up feeling more awake. Weird but it's working so hey. I find myself waking up around 4 am sometimes, usually somewhere between 4 and 6. I'm turning into a real early bird.

Before cpap, I could easily sleep 10-12 hrs.
Now, post cpap,6-7 hrs will do me. No matter when I go to bed.

So I'm not weird??

I only slept 4-5 hours a night pre-CPAP... waking up every hour or so.

Now I'm going 6.5 hours straight, but then I'm done. I guess I was hoping for more. My wife says "why are you getting up now?"

Maybe I should start going for a walk at 4 in the morning... or just don't go to bed till midnight.

Maybe I can try this smelly stuff folks have been talking about.

If you are sleeping 6 1/2 hours straight that is wonderful. Even though I sleep much better with CPAP I still wake up at least twice during the night. I average about 6 1/2 hours with 2 to 4 wakeups.
That is still much better than before.

If you're feeling good during the day, don't question it. I have the same experience. When I use my CPAP all night, iin addition to feeling better the next day, I almost always wake up early and can't go back to sleep. It's my body telling me that it's had enough sleep and it's time to get up.

There's nothing magical about the number 8. Remember that everyone's body is different. Your body may simply not need 8 hours. Listen to what it's telling you.

Doug.

Well J, if you're weird, then so am I. My sleep patterns are exactly like yours. 4-5 hours pre-CPAP and my average sleep now according to my new Encore Pro is 6 hours and 37 minutes. It's good sleep but not enough IMHO.

What is it that makes 6.5 hours such a magic number? I try to sleep more but I'm awake and can't go back to sleep. I think I could use a couple more hours but no go so far (just into this a few weeks).

I try to hold off on going to sleep till about midnight so I wake up at a reasonable time (not too much time left till dawn). A walk at 4am does not sound like a good idea to me. I would just become wider awake. But a long walk in the evening (just before or after dinner) does make me sleep better and overall I feel better in the morning.

Good luck sleeping

LM

I read this thread last night and decided to post after yet another fantastic night's sleep, including going back to sleep after I initially woke up at 6 this morning. For my first two years on cpap I never slept past 2 am and could never bring myself to put that mask back on after I woke up. For me, that changed overnight the first time I used pur-sleep and I've been sleeping in whenever I want for the last 18 months.

Here are a few experiences on this subject from members of the forum:
Peace zonked me out and for the VERY FIRST TIME since I started CPAP (almost two months). I did not wake up from bedtime to alarm going off. I couldn't believe it when I heard the alarm go off...
I over slept this morning—I have five alarms and didn't hear any of them.
Yahoo!!! I slept 10 hours straight last night... I was using my essential oils. I have not slept like that in years. I find I really look forward to putting on my mask and going to bed since I started using Pur-Sleep.
Went to bed at 11:15 and slept to 8 a.m.! This is a first! I have not slept through the night in so long! This product is a wonderful addition to my CPAP therapy.
This is the first time since going under the mask that I have slept this much. On mornings I don't have to get up I have been sleeping 8 hrs or more.

I'm sleeping almost 50% more a night (Avg 8 hours now) with the system as apposed to without. I'm waking less, dreaming more. My AHI numbers are dropping and even had a straight 6 days at 0.9 or under. All in all I'd say my sleep time under the mask is a whole lot more pleasant than before.
Studies in the last several years have found that while pleasant smells administered during sleep do not typically result in conscious arousal (and hence "odor alarms" would be ineffective), the brain is still activated by smells during sleep. It seems like pleasant aromatics provide a calming effect. Unpleasant smells, on the other hand, like plastics, have an irritating effect from a chemosensory standpoint. I now believe that the plastic smells from my cpap are what resulted in me waking up every morning at 2 am.

Good luck in your efforts to improve your therapy!

Try the Scented CPAP Mask with Pur-Sleep's CPAP Aromatherapy--CPAP Diffuser and Essential Oils.

Who is to say what a normal amount of sleep is? Sometime being to aware of cpap can bring you out of sleep, like listening for leaks, checking strap adjustments, worrying about ahi etc. just go with the flow and realize it is what it is.Ever notice you sleep the best 20 minutes before the alarm goes off.

I'm feeling great. Not as good as I did when I was 20, but pretty darn good. I worked out in the yard all day today. I'm tired, but normal tired.

Life is good. Maybe 6.5 hours is all I need. I survived on 4 hours with OSA for years....

After about two months of treatment, I'm hardly an expert, but ...

My experience is that there are a lot of layers. When you get your CPAP treatment working well, you've removed a major issue -- but others remain.

These days, I often wake up in the middle of the night. I'm learning to relax, listen to what my body is telling me, and try to respond appropriately. Sometimes doing a little reading over a bowel of cereal and milk does the trick. Or doing a few minutes of work taking care of that nagging issue I woke up thinking about. Above all, relax! Getting upset about it won't help.

I am also a 7 hour sleeper. I can't nap because that messes up my nightime sleep. I have been really tired and went to bed early....big mistake. Up at 3 am. So I go to bed at 10.......even when I would rather go to bed at 9. And get up at 5. When I would love to sleep until 9 (especially on weekends). but i feel great. sleepy, but because I have a busy restaraunt and I should be sleepy all the running I do. So yep I can relate.
