Anything similar to discontinued Resmed Mirage (not ultra)?

Post by JDS » Tue Sep 11, 2007 8:54 am

Howdy! My husband and I have lurked here a lot, and this is my first post.

He's the one with OSA, but I'm the one that types.

JD was diagnosed with OSA in 2000, and he loves his old AutoSet T, but we're thinking about an M Series C-flex or maybe A-flex w/ heated humidifier. 7 years is a long time for a machine.

He has been using a plain old Mirage mask (this was before the "ultra" came out) and it seems any mask he gets doesn't work the same. When I heard a few years ago that they were being discontinued, I bought 3 out-of-pocket. He's had a lot of mask leaks lately. Back to wakin' up with headaches. I don't know if it's the mask seal itself, or if it's the old headgear that is causing the leaks. I found a replacement mask seal for it, but it's only available in Shallow size on cpap.com.

The Mirage is very lightweight. It has no swivel like the Ultra. Its hose goes up over the head, and he has a bungee cord attached to the ceiling to hold a ring which the hose goes through. I sewed a cover for it, so it doesn't make noises going through the ring, and it keeps rainout in check. It's a great set-up.

He'd like a mask that has these features:

very lightweight
no swivel
hose is oriented up toward the forehead
no gel

Masks he's tried and didn't like:
Resmed Activa (too heavy, causes excessive rainout),
ComfortGel (leaked at his eyes, gel is uncomfortable, maybe we got the wrong size),
Comfort Classic (also leaked at his eyes, again, maybe the size is too big?),
Mirage Ultra (I think the swivel gets sideways and pulls the hose and causes leaks... but maybe we can tape the swivel upward?), and he tried an old
Mirage Full Face (this was a 2000 or 2001 mask that he never could get to quit leaking).

If you know of any masks that might work, let me know. We've spent a lot on masks that he doesn't use. We might put some on Cpap-Auction. Especially the one he wore for just 5 mins! Eek!

Thanks in advance!

Sometimes with older style masks that are no longer made I can order the parts and put one together. I have a few people that like the older style.

Have you tried the ultra mirage II - somewhat similar, but with a swivel.

Sorry, I didn't see that he tried that already!

That's what's so aggravating... a Mirage II SHOULD work fine if that's what Resmed wants to replace the old Mirage with.

I did think of the "parts" approach, but the large size mask seal isn't available.

When he first started cpap therapy, he wanted a full face to work so badly. But it was so miserable trying to sleep and it kept making "whoopee cushion" sounds.

Do any of you think the Quattro is a HUGE improvement over the old Mirage FF? Should he try it again?

Sometimes I wonder if it'd be easier to get a big bag with a hose attached and put over one's head and tie it at the neck... you wouldn't have strap lines on your face, and you wouldn't smother because of the air inlet. Sigh. (just kidding, of course, but surely there's a better way)
