Can anyone tell me what the word "Settling" means. It appears on the display. Did they misspell setting??
Just curious.
Thanks

Hello, there. Seem to be a lot of Vantage users on the boards lately! No, it isn't a misspelling. The settling feature allows for a lower pressure just after starting the machine for added comfort. It is similar to ramp, but is used when the machine is in auto mode. Ramp, which starts at a lower pressure and increases it to the desired setting over a fixed period of time, is used in straight CPAP mode.

Thanks loads.
I had a ResMed S8 Elite and just a few days ago got this machine. The S8 Elite showed Ramp,Menu and the ramp time. The AutoSet showed "Settling,Menu,Ramp time and warmup."
Learn something new everyday. Thanks again and have a good one.

One thing puzzles me. If it is set on auto (4 to 20) why would you need a ramp time. Would it not start out at 4 and adjust according to your needs as time went on??

Ramp is the term used for increasing pressure to your prescribed pressure when the machine is used as a straight CPAP.
Settling is the term used to the length of time the unit takes before data is recorded. Settling applies only when the unit is operating as an APAP. This allows you to fiddle with the mask and get comfortable, fall asleep, etc before the machine responds to events. It holds the minimum pressure during this time period, then it starts to increase the pressure in response to hypopneas or apneas.
If your unit is set on Auto with the min and max pressures at 4 and 20, during settling the unit is deliver 4 cm until the settling time has passed and then it will respond to events using up to 20 cm of pressure.
It's probably a good idea the narrow the min and max pressures nearer to your 95% pressure.
Good Luck,

I agree. There are rare instances of people running the machines at a "wide open" range like 4/20 or 5/20. But most of the time the doctor will set a more narrow range.
I've learned that the Vantage is about having options. The cool part about that is the options are there if you need them. But on a bare bones machine you don't get the options. This works fine for some people, but I'd rather know it's there and not need it than to need it and not have it available to me. It all can get a bit confusing, but once you learn the capabilities of the machine, you'll be glad you have it.

If you're on auto it's best to use the settling, because your breathing pattern is different when you're awake. You want the machine to work off your sleeping breathing pattern, not your waking one, so you don't want it to include your time fallling asleep when it calculates your pattern.
Sorry, not explaining very well. Having a tough time atm (dog sick).
There are threads about this, about July 1-7 time.

Awww! I hope your dog feels better soon, Moby! Sick pets are very emotionally distressing! They can't tell you what's wrong and are totallly dependent on you and the vet to fix it. No one knows that more than a pet lover!

Thanks, RiverDave I appreciate your comments.
drummergirl410; I follow you. I am having some problems with very active dreams and the Doctor thought maybe the pressure (11) might be off. Since this Dr. did not give me the sleep test he suggested trying the AutoSet for 3 weeks (4-20) and he can read the results to see if I need another sleep test.
I didn't have much confidence in the first Doctor, thus the second one.
I am not convinced that I have OSA because I do not have hardly any of the symptoms other that one, I do snoore and have very active dreams.
By the way, the Autoset is 50 to 75% quieter and I am not blowing bubbles with it like the S8 Elite. I think I am breathing easier to. The EPR was 3 on the Elite.
Anyway thanks loads, didn't mean to bend your ear, just sort of got rambling.

Re: Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage
Yes, a trial on an open pressure range is good! They did it with me too even though I did have the titration study done. It prooved very helpful! After that the doctor can narrow your range. I also tried using it in straight CPAP mode. I also used an EPR of 3. It was good, but auto mode is more comfortable for me. Straight CPAP with no EPR was not doable for me, as I had significant difficulty with aerophalgia. I was glad to have my Vantage back!RJ wrote:Thanks, RiverDave I appreciate your comments.
