Eyes sore .......almost always

Post by flitestik » Wed May 04, 2005 9:49 am

Hi All;

I am about eight weeks into my first CPAP treatment and the feeling is wonderful! I am using a five year old CPAP from REMSTAR called a Solo. It has only one pressure setting with a ramp up feature. I have purchased a new Resmed Aptive ($250 Cdn) and it seems good BUT..........

I have a little trouble with air leakage around the eyes and get sore eyes from this in the morning. Not so much sore just an irritation. Does anyone else have this prob. and have you found a solution? Also have any of you used the CPAP model above? I intend to upgrade later to the Resmed Spirit but money is a little tight and I have no medical coverage.

Great thing i found CPAP though man i feel soooooooo much better, suffered for many year before finding out.

Dave

I haven't come across the Aptive. It sounds from your post like it is it a machine. What kind of mask are you using?

I think "Aptive" is probably a typo meaning the Activa mask by ResMed.

flitestik, do you know what size the cushion is for your Activa? It comes in three sizes - shallow, standard, large.

I can wear either shallow or standard, but I like the shallow better as the shallow cushion is a bit wider at the top. The shallow seems to seat a little better up at the bridge of my nose (which is a small nose, normal bridge and not wide...go figure.)

Possibly one of the other cushion sizes would prevent air leaks up near your eyes.

But even before considering another cushion size, fiddle a good bit with the button on the vertical bar that goes up to the forehead pad. That adjustment button on the vertical bar changes the angle of the whole mask on your face. Mess with that while lying down in sleeping position (not while sitting up.) That angle can do more to stop leaks at top or bottom than anything else you can do.

Also be sure you're lying down in sleeping position while making final adjustments to the straps, which should be rather loose for the Activa to work well.

If all adjustments fail and a different size mask cushion doesn't help either, I've heard of some people stuffing a bit of kleenex at leaky spots on other masks. Might work with the Activa too.

Good luck!
