Septoplasty for me tomorrow

Post by frapilu » Sun Aug 19, 2007 1:23 pm

Hi all,

It's finally here. The hospital just called to tell me to be there at 8:30 am tomorrow for my septoplasty. I was originally supposed to be operated in April but was bumped.

Here in Canada, because I have OSA, they'll be keeping more overnight tomorrow so I'll get home Tuesday morning.

I'll be so happy when it's over.

Good luck. You are in for a few rough weeks, mainly due to lack of CPAP, but in about a month all will be well. I'll grateful every day I had it done. Of course, in the good 'ole US of A they send you home that day....OSA or not. Don't let anyone tell you "care" is part of the health system in this country. I got it done out patient and was out the door 3 1/2 hours after I arrived.

Good luck tomorrow! I had my septoplasty/turbinate reduction done July 24th and I have absolutely no regrets! I can breathe thru my nose for the first time in my life and it's great! Food even tastes better!

Hey JeffH,

I remember when you had your septoplasty earlier this year.

My doctor and the hospital are absolutely convinced that because I use a full face mask, I'll be using it immediately after the surgery. In fact, they've insisted that I bring my CPAP to the surgery. I know Sharon1965 was also told to bring hers to the surgery back in April and they didn't use it but I believe she uses a nasal interace mask. Perhaps a full face mask makes it easier after the surgery?

I really appreciated reading your experience so it helped me know what to expect for tomorrow. Even if I end up not being able to use CPAP for a bit, I'll know from you that it'll get better.

Thanks for your wish for good luck.

France

good luck, you will feel much better after things all heal.

It is not too bad a surgery, I woke up a couple times during mine once during the chiseling process and and again with they were checking how my nose felt, it was done over 25 years ago, they only gave me enough injection to keep me under and not too much.

Mine turned out great, nose nice and straight, the bump removed, the nose narrowed, healing and pain afterward wasn't too bad, most difficult part was having the gauze splints left in for a few days so you had to breathe through your mouth during those times.

Of course my oldest daughter was only about 18 months old back then she goes to give me a big ole kiss and bongs my nose with her forehead, almost knocked me out it did.
someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

Hi marymoon,

Thanks. Oh dear, food tasting better is probably not a good thing since I'm already overweight. Mind you, perhaps if I taste it more, I'll be satisfied with less??

It's encouraging to hear that others have had this and are happy with it.

Hi Snoredog,

They tell me that they won't be affecting the outside of my nose, just the inside but I guess I'll see. I truly hope not to wake up at all until it's all over. I'm squeamish about stuff like that

Wow, that bonk from your daughter must have been painful!!! I don't have anyone but hubby at home so I'll make sure to remind him to be careful

Thanks

France

France,

I, too, am hoping that with food tasting better I'll have less desire to eat so much, but so far, no dice! I still remember the first steak I had after surgery - heaven!!!

My kids are 4 and 6 and they both accidentely bonked me in my nose just after surgery trying to give hugs and kisses. I almost passed out from the pain!

I'll be keeping you in my thoughts! Remember, once you get the splints out, it'll be smooth sailing!

Mary

When I had mine done I had no gauze packing. Just plastic splints that looked like I had soda straws in my nose.

Outside your nose won't be sore? Maybe not sore to the touch, but I was eating dinner teh day after my surgery and kinda like... flexed my upper lip down over my upper teeth..... and it brought tears to my eyes. I could not have used mu CPAP (wasn't on it back then) but ..... my sleep doc says he prescribes an oral mask after surgery for his OSA patients. (Oracle? .... not sure if he told me the name)///

anyways, if you wear a full face mask, as long as you didn't have any problems with pressure on the bridge of your nose BEFORE teh surgery.... you're most likely going to be fine.

The day OF teh surgery was kinda sucky afterwards, but the NEXT day was magnitudes better.

Mary,

They say I'll have an appointment a week after the surgery, then a month after that. I assume that means I'll have the spints out a week after.

Hi yardbird,

I don't know if the outside of my nose will be sore or not. I meant that the doctor said that the shape of it won't change since he's only correcting the deviated septum inside.

I don't know if he'll be putting in gauze or what since the instruction sheet didn't say anything other than an appointment a week later, then a month later. They didn't even splints but since everyone I've seen on cpaptalk.com has had splints, I'm assuming I will too. I know Sharon had packing but I don't think anyone else did and I know she had a lot of bleeding so I'm hoping I won't either.

Thanks
France

Hey France,
Good Luck tomorrow on your surgery. From what I understand most everyone who has this surgery is very happy with the results. I am sure it will make breathing easier, and anything that helps that has got to be good, No?

Let us know how you are making out as soon as you feel like posting your results.
I wish you the very best.

Karen

Hi Karen,

I'm positive that the people at the hospital will be impressed with the lovely PadACheek strap pads on my UMFF when I bring in my CPAP

Thanks

France
