My surgery

Post by josh » Wed Aug 15, 2007 5:37 pm

Hi all,

Sorry if I can't type very well, I am pretty drugged up right now. I went in on Thursday last week to have my dual jaw advancement/chin advancement, and after 10 hours in the OR under the care of 6 doctors, and 4 blood transfusions, I finally awoke on Sunday at the hospital.

So it looks like I had some slow clotting times, and thats why I had the transfusions. Sunday is when the breathing tubes in my nose came out...that was very painful. I was on morphine until my release from the hospital on Tuesday, and now I am on liquid roxecet for pain (as my jaws are wired shut).

I did throw up once with my jaw wired shut...that was very painful and I hope it doesn't happen again, as it went everywhere it could go (including out my nose).

I drool now like a siv, and I probably won't get feeling in my lower lip for 3 weeks to 3 months...but my daughter is running around cleaning me up with a bib ;p.

I am not gonna lie, the pain is immense, and I feel dirty as I cannot brush my teeth, just do a mouth rinse.

My wife has been very good to me, she has been taking care of me including shaving my face.

Now for the results...before my surgery my airway was narrow at about 2-3mm. After the surgery...my airway now sits at 13-14mm...and yes I can feel the difference. As far as my sleep goes, it is hard to say right now because I am so drugged up, but sometimes I feel wide awake...oh and I haven't used CPAP since my surgery on Thursday.

The nurses and the doctors have all been very good to me, and my chief surgeon says my teeth came together beutifully. Well, I'm gonna go for now.

Cheers,

Josh

Wonderful news, Josh, that your procedure widened your airway so significantly. Please keep us informed as you feel up to it. I'm eagerly awaiting the day you're telling us how great you feel and how much you're enjoying life. Till then, little updates will have to do.

Best wishes,
Kathy

Wow Josh, thanks for the info. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery. I cannot imagine going through such a surgery. I don't think I'm that brave. Please keep us up to date with your progress as you are able.

I wish you the best. I just had an operation on my elbow and that has been a major pain in the @ss (not literally), so I can't imagine what you are going through.

I don't know if you have come across this site... it's a guy's 10 week journal about the same surgery (I think). His seems to be successful, so I hope your recovery goes well also:

I was just asking about you....I've had similar surgery in the past where my jaw (upper and lower) were realigned, in two separate surgeries. I totally understand what you went through and what you're feeling! The teeth wired shut and everything.

Get used to liquid Ensure, and I'm sure it doesn't taste much better now than it did then I lived on that, smoothies and liquid soup, and I mean liquid, no chunks.

Good luck there....I feel for you!

Josh,

Was glad to read your post as that will be the next step for me per my physician as I also have a small airway and jawline. Please keep us posted
