FF Masks

Post by Sid » Wed Jul 18, 2007 7:05 pm

I have been on CPAP therapy for about 7 weeks and have tried several nasal masks, etc. with no luck. However, I have had better results with the ResMed Ultra Mirage Full Face Mask. Since beginning this therapy I have felt better during the day...no more "sleep driving" and definitely no snoring, but I have yet to have a complete nights rest. I can only imagine how good I might feel with a full nights rest. I have been waking up several times at night hearing rushing air sounds from the vent on the mask or face farting from losing a seal or at times I have been startled awake with full pressure air flow that makes me feel like a dog riding in the back of the truck with air filling my jowls. I am a mouth breather and would like to know if there are other masks out there that may work better than this one? I've seen one with nose do-dads and a mask over the mouth only, does this one work well? [/b]

Hi Sid, Welcome to the forum.
If you don't mind nasal interfaces that fit in your nares, the Hybrid can produce pretty good results. Only way to know if it suits you is to try it out, first hand.
If you're getting a good seal when you first put it on, could it be possible that there's too much of a moisture build-up?
In the past when I got the "face farting" (lol) from the UMFF, It was usually due to the humidity being turned up too high. Also, it may take a little while to get your straps tweaked just right.

Sid, following your recent post elsewhere where you say you're still having problems with leaking from both the Hybrid and Ultra Mirage, I took the liberty of bumping up this old thread of yours.

I hope more people will see it and that you will get some helpful advice.

regards

Di

PS I found the FP432 actually holds my mouth tight shut with its little "chin shelf".

(If this is still an issue)

If it's too tight or too loose, the UMFF can exhibit those characteristics. If it's properly sized and adjusted, it's a good mask. It's my favorite.

If you're using ramp, I'd suggest doing the adjusting at your full pressure. I keep my top straps loose and the tension on the bottom straps.....forehead piece in the full-upright position. With those adjustments, the forehead piece doesn't really touch my forehead.

Excellent input. I think a lot of us "newbie's"...well, speaking for myself....adjust the mask when we get into bed.....and do not take into consideration the higher pressure changing the fit.

If one's pressure is a 10 and the ramp is at 6 and adjusted for fitting at 6 then this could cause a lot of leakage when sleeping and 10 kicks in??????

Thank you

Elliot

I've adjusted the humidity down, but wake up with cotton mouth so I may need to increase the humidity a little. I will try the adjustments on the high pressure that seems like the common sense thing to do, wonder why I didn't think of that before. Greatly appreciate the help guys. I do feel better even with the problems I'm having and I can't wait to see what I'll feel like after a full nights sleep.

Too much humidity can also stuff up your nasal passages even worse. After a couple of nights of humidification when I started 2 1/2 years ago, I immediately shut it off and have been "cold turkey" ("pass-over") ever since (even in the winter). I found that the cool air keeps my nasal passages open much better during the night.

YMMV
