Aroma Therapy with CPAP - Is it helping?

Post by Nodzy » Sun Aug 12, 2007 7:17 am

Yesterday, Saturday, I received the Pur-Sleep aroma therapy trial pack from Bret. It arrived quickly.

Last night I tried the Clear fragrance.. Not that I didn't expect a pleasant deepening of my sleep. But it appears that it was very beneficial in helping me to get to deeper sleep, and achieve it multiple times after slipping back from it.

I still had tossing and turning, and only one mask-off episode. The Comfort Curve headgear quick-release button was tripped by my head pressure on the pillow. I quickly woke to latch and reseat the headgear and mask on my face.

Usually I have one to four mask-off episodes during a night for minutes to hours each from me unconsciously pulling the mask off. This time I woke as soon as the latch released and the headgear slipped position. That is encouraging, to know that I was so responsive from what appeared to have been a comfortable sleep -- which is very unusual for me.

My tossing and turning, in large part, relates to persistant pain from neuropathy and fibromyalgia, and apparently from low SPO2 (oxygen saturation) level at times throughout my sleep which causes me to thrust for oxygen.

Sadly, I was so exhausted when I went to bed, and so thrilled to be trying the Pur-Sleep, that I forgot to reinstall the card in the M-series A-Flex. Yes, that was not a bright omission from the regimen.

I will be trying the Clear fragrance again tonight, with the card in the unit. Though, I do want to try all of the fragrances over time to see which, despite my awake preference, yields the best sleep benefit for me. I'm sure that of the nine fragrances at least two or three will be preferrable to me for the sleep benefit of aroma therapy.

More to come......

I received my Pur-Sleep trial on Thursday (thanks Bret).

And I definitely believe that it has helped me with my waking episodes during the night (which I believe are probably from too much caffeine--my self medicating technique prior to CPAP. I'm in the process of reducing my intake).

The first night, I tried Spice, because I like the smell of cloves and orange.

I remember waking during the night, and smelling the slight scent of orange, and as I thought about how good it smelled, I quickly went back to sleep.

The same on the other two nights, trying out the Clear and the Peace scents.

Each aroma, created a slightly different feel to the night's sleep. I think my scent preferences in order are:

1) Spice
2) Clear
3) Peace

The only difficulty I've had, is trying to drop only one drop on my Diffuser Pads, I always seem to drop two, which is a little too strong for me (at least when using Spice or Peace). Not a real problem though, because I simply move the Diffuser back a little, or flip the pad.

Oh, and I've only had one pulled off mask in the three nights I've used Pur-Sleep.

Thanks for the feedback--I'm glad to hear this is helping. I have received a number of PMs with more of the same kinds of responses.

For people contacting me about the trial, it closed last week.

2nd night with the Clear aroma:

Typically, as my life is at this time, I have stressful days and get to bed late on most nights.

The Clear fragrance was used again and it was welcome. It was a fitful night overall, with one mask-off period that lasted about 2-1/2 hours. I woke and put the mask back on and enjoyed my last 2:45-minutes of sleep while resting peacefully. Along with somewhat better leakage numbers than usual.

Oddly, my average APAP and 90% APAP number were somewhat lower than usual. Whether that resulted from the aroma therapy being introduced into the regimen remains to be revealed.

The Hybrid mask and Ruby chin strap should arrive this week and provide me the opportunity to lower my mouth breathing and mouth leakage (tunnel venting) numbers.

It appears that overall compliance should be easier to achieve routinely on more or most nights when using the aroma therapy. Even with the current less then desireable leakage numbers and pained and fitful sleep. Thus far, I am amazed at the difference that adding Pur-Sleep to my regimen has made.

I will continue using the Clear aroma for a total of seven nights before switching to another fragrance.

More to come....

3rd night with the Clear aroma:

I'm impressed. My third night with the Clear aroma was the best yet. Though I did start again with two drops on the same diffuser pad I have used on each night -- the aroma was a bit strong at first, but not at all unpleasant for me. I do keep the diffuser tray right against the back of the XPAP, just below the air intake port.

I had no mask-off episodes last night. Though I still have the mouth breathing and mouth leakage (tunnel venting) effect which raises my leakage numbers, as shown in the Encore Pro graphs. Hopefully, I can remedy those problems with either the Hybrid mask, or the Ruby chin strap coupled with one of the nasal interfaces I currently prefer.

But, my large leak numbers were down last night to just 3.5-minutes. They are usually up around 20 to 60-minutes per night, in addition to mask-off at least one to four times on most nights.

Usually, I have an average leakage of greater than 50-LPM. Last night it was down to 44.62-LPM of leakage over a total of 7-hours and 48-minutes of mask-on sleep time. For me, that is phenominal. Both of my usual masks have designed vent leakage of over 20-LPM at pressures of 8.5 to 13-cmH2O I am currently set for on the M-series Auto A-FLEX REMstar.

It's obvious that the addition of the very pleasant Clear aroma encourages better, more peaceful sleep. Which allows me to be more responsive to quickly correct mask seal leakage and mask-off episodes. I'm also having fewer mask-off episodes. On two of the three nights of using the Clear fragrance I did not pull the mask off in my sleep.

After four more nights of using the Clear aroma and I should have a firm valuation of its effectiveness for me. Then I will switch to the Peace fragrance for a seven night run. In addition, I am ordering the other six Pur-Sleep fragrances so that I can try each for a week in order to find the two or three that are best for my sleep needs.

Bret, thank you for including me in the trial. I am gaining hope that I can achieve successful XPAP therapy that may prolong my life, and will yield a better quality of life while I am on the breezy side of the dirt.

I too recevied my trail package last week and I love this EO. I use them all
a different one each nite. I still have a few wake up but just turn over and right back to sleep. My sleep is so deep now that I waking up drooling (sorry). I'm still sleepy during the day but I think it's because i can't keep my mouth shut (chin strap). I need a ff which I will get next time.

Nodzy, I am very pleased to hear how much my crazy idea is helping you and equally so for the detailed feedback you've provided. You've done a great job with your therapy so far depsite having your fair share of challenges. I believe that you will continue to see improvement in your therapy. As for me, I went from almost no compliance to using my cpap every night, all night for the last 18 months, and rarely waking up at night (maybe once or twice in a week). This has transformed my life, which is why I've just felt compelled to develop these products.

I'm afraid most people (particularly men) reject this out of hand because to them, fragrance means Foo Foo. It's hard to explain with mere words that this is not about the kinds of fragrances we're typically exposed to (yuck).

Looking forward to more

Yes indeed, pur-sleep/SleepGuy has now made cpap an enjoyable endeavour. I purchased all the aromas and it is a nightly ritual of trying different combinations. Can't say that I dislike any of the EOs available.

Best regards,

Fred

I have also been trialing Pur Sleep, absolutely love it. Last night I went to put the oil on the diffuser pad and I couldn't find it, I have a very rambunctious 2 year old. Anyway, I still rested fairly well on cpap, but my sleep just had a different quality to it than with Pur Sleep. I woke up 2-3 times and missed the scent of the clear EO. I've only been using this about 5-7 days, but I'm addicted!!

I have bought 2 more of their oils and am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the shipment.

There is a Pur Sleep website (http://www.pur-sleep.com), or they have a store on ebay.

I believe it was the 2nd of 3 trials that Bret included me in. Thanks, Bret.

I am compliant with my therapy and my AHI is usually <2. My problem is insomnia, and I experience moderate difficulty both in going to sleep and staying asleep.

I started Pur-Sleep on July 30. I received it a week earlier, but delayed starting as I was trying something else to tweak my therapy and did not want to do two new things at once. I have used Pur-Sleep as follows:

1-2 drops Peace -- 7 nights
1 drop Peace & 1 drop Clear - 2 nights
1-2 drops Clear -- 3 nights
1 drop Spice - 2 nights

The bad news is that I cannot tell that the essential oils help me with going to sleep or staying asleep. Sigh. Darn. Oh well.

The good news is I like all three scents and would be willing to purchase others over time. As a matter of fact, I should benefit more than many of you because I will be awake longer enjoying the scents. ''

I have been using Pur-Sleep ever since Bret introduced it with the old diffuser system. My personal favorite mixture is Clear and Peace. It works like a charm!

I believe Bret said in the "new formulas" he is going to include Peace in with the Clear and other fragrances? That way I only have to use one bottle to get both. Is that right Bret? If so, when can we expect the new formulations?

Until then I always put a drop of two of peace on the pad with what ever other fragrance I am using. No more insomnia, and I am sleeping longer than before. Thanks to Pur-Sleep, CPAP is almost enjoyable!!
