Asthma and xPAP
Asthma and xPAP
I have bronchial asthma. I'm wondering:
- what other member's experience is with their asthma symptoms after beginning xPAP therapy,
- what asthma symptoms are experienced after being on xPAP for some time, and
- have others noticed breathing and/or asthma symptom improvement using Pur-Sleep?
After being on CPAP, I have noticed that my breathing has improved not only at night when on CPAP, but during the day as well. As a result, I have been able to reduce albuterol and am considering stopping Flovent.
My symptom improvement may be due to many factors, not the least of which is the reduction of OSA events that challenge the bronchials such as:
1) The pollen count going down at the same time as beginning CPAP.
2) My machine has the fine filter for small particulates and the grey foam filter for larger particulates, which means I'm breathing even cleaner air than before (which was fairly clean).
3) I noticed even more improvement when using Pur-Sleep. To test this, I stopped using it for a couple of nights and found I had to clear my throat during the night as was customary before first using the oils. When not using the oil at night I also didn't breath as well during the day and had to use my albuterol. When I began using Pur-Sleep once again, bronchial phlegm stopped again.
When I began using Pur-Sleep I used Clear, Peace, and Clear/Peace combined. Yesterday I just got the Deluxe Starter Kit and last night tried Fresh and Creme together. I am breathing good today as when using the Clear, Peace, or Clear/Peace. So, I wonder, will all the oils benefit my breathing?

Gasp,
I've found that as I sleep better (more restorative sleep), my asthma also got better, so the answer is yes. Can't say anything about the Purr-Sleep, since I don't use it.

I haven't tried Pur Sleep, so I also can't coment there. I've been om xpap for a couple of weeks and have noticed an improvment in my asthma. I haven't had a setback since I started. I feel like I breathe better in the daytime as well. Granted this is a short time to make a judgment call on, so I'll keep you posted!

Glad your asthma is also better. Your mention of "restorative sleep" rings true for me as well. I think my body does has a chance to heal given more sleep and even more so with the reduced challenge to the bronchials during OSA events.Amontilado wrote:Gasp,

Great - no pneumonia - that must have felt good to realize you weren't going to have to go through it yet another time! My asthma is also triggered; particulates including pollen and diesel etc, chemicals such as perfume, chemical cleaners etc, and exercise in the cold. I just ordered astragalus root that was recommended by my doctor who is a naturopath to increase immunity to allergens. Hopefully it will be another thing on the list of what will help my asthma. I'd love to live without inhalers and be able to be around people who wear perfume, and more. . .cflame1 wrote:I've got asthma and allergies as well, though it only shows up under certain conditions. The standard pneumonia that I've had for probably the last 5 years didn't show up this year (it usually happens in January). My asthma is triggered by sickness, cats... and too much exercise in the cold.
Yeah! I've only been on CPAP going on 2 months, but I don't recall a time when my asthma cleared this rapidly, so I'm willing to attribute it to recent changes. I'm also hopeful that xPAP and other items on my list will help keep my asthma at bay. Thanks for keeping me posted. I hope you continue to have relief.drummergirl410 wrote:I haven't tried Pur Sleep, so I also can't coment there. I've been om xpap for a couple of weeks and have noticed an improvment in my asthma. Hmmm, steady weight loss, asthma better, not as cranky (husband appreciates this : ), and more makes me feel better about being on a mask for the rest of my life - or until there is another feasible alternative.
I don't use Pur-Sleep, but am glad it is working for you.
My asthma has improved a great deal. I go days without using my ventolin inhaler, I used to need it every morning.
I think the filter in the machine helps a lot (except when I checked it and replaced it back to front ) and also the better lung expansion overnight as I breathe properly.

can't really say it is helping my asthma muc- in the beginning, I thought perhaps it was, but after time, I see I'm right back needing my meds still- but I smoke as well, and that definately isn't helping at all. Be careful with the oils though as some oils can cause inflamation of hte airways if you're allergic to them- stick with hte oens that you know don't bother you I guess.
Sure I backed over the Vampire Officer, But I swear I never saw him in my rearview mirror
Mine seems greatly improved also. I'd gotten to where I was needing Flovent on a regular basis, and haven't had to use it in almost a month, or the albuterol, even after mowing the lawn in hot weather with a push mower. That's always caused me to have to hit the inhaler before. However, using the humidifier makes my lungs hurt a lot. Not sure what's up with that ... it's just plain distilled water.

Isn't it crazy to think of all these years my Dr who helps me manage my asthma didn't once pose it as something to explore!Anonymous wrote:I don't use Pur-Sleep, but am glad it is working for you.

Do you know which oils may cause inflamation? And, I wonder if the oil scent going through the fine filter my machine has helps reduce the possibility?Nazareth wrote:can't really say it is helping my asthma muc- in the beginning, I thought perhaps it was, but after time, I see I'm right back needing my meds still- but I smoke as well, and that definately isn't helping at all. When you say your lungs hurt, what kind of feeling is it? That's interesting.Anonymous wrote:Mine seems greatly improved also. The lungs hurting is like having bronchitis which causes a burning sensation when you inhale that makes you cough, at least that's what I find when my lungs hurt-
No, I'm not sure which oils might cause problems- I think though,m that essentially, most is filtered out by the filter and we're perhaps just getting the smell of the oil mostly- although I'm not positive, but it seems reasonable being that our machines do have hte filters

Thanks! Lungs burning sounds uncomfortable! So far all I have is bronchial inflammation. I've used all the oils in the Pur-Sleep Deluxe Starter Kit pack now and have had no bronchial inflammation. I have slept better, haven't smelled the nasty plastic, and look forward to the 'flavor' of the night. : )Nazareth wrote:The lungs hurting is like having bronchitis which causes a burning sensation when you inhale that makes you cough, at least that's what I find when my lungs hurt-

I havent seen any asthma improvement. But it hasnt gotten worse, so I cant complain. I am still using my advair every day, and my albuterol at least once daily. I also end up in office for a breathing treatment about every 2 weeks or so. But mine is pretty severe and has been for most of my life. I have been rushed to the hospital more than once. The pur sleep is nice, but to tell the truth I havent even used it in like 3 days. I have been to tired to deal with it, and to tell the truth I dont really mind plastic smells. It reminds me of hospitals....which for me were like a second home as a child, it makes me feel safe. I cant really explain it.
But the asthma for me tends to get worse without the humidifier. I get too dry and then have problems. I keep my humidifier up all the way. I think maybe it helps thin some mucus making it easier to breath. I dont know.

I find the humidifier very helpful. I've learned the hard way that on cold nights the trick is to turn the humidifier *down*, not *up*! The steeper the temperature gradient between humifidifier water and room temp, the more the risk of rainout.
