Twilight NP, Aura/Headrest is LOUD

Post by DreamStalker » Sun Aug 05, 2007 3:40 pm

I tired the Twilight NP, Aura/Headrest last night for about 30 minutes. It was about as loud as the Adam Circuit.

I tried it au natural since the headgear fit me without even having to make any adjustments. The pillows are soft enough for comfort and stiff enough for structural stability ... so I had no leaks (at least fot the short time I trialed it). It was just too loud for me.

So what is the secret to making it more quite ... let me guess, RG's pantyhose?

LOL, roberto, i don't think the pantyhose make a difference in the noise unless you're covering the exhaust port...i think i did find the aura a little loud at first, especially on inhale, compared to the CL2 but i got used to it...now, the NAII? that is one loud *$#@$*&%

give it a fair trial, you might really like it...i'm still liking it better than the breeze

I find the Aura/Twilight/whatever it is called these days to be quite loud as well. Comfortable, but loud.

I tried putting a film of silicone lube at the connector between the nasal pillows and the section of hose where the two attach (where they connect at the headpiece) and found that this got rid of the high-pitched whistle that I was hearing. The sound of air moving, especially on inhale, remains loud.

I still think that the Breeze nasal pillows are the most comfortable, but the Aura/Twilight/whatever, is significantly more comfortable and stable than the Breeze outrigger.

Only if you stuff 'em in yer ears.

It's not a quiet mask, that's for sure. To me the sound is the same as my Breeze was...more sound on inhale.

I run a fan on high in my bedroom, so that pretty much covers up the sound of any mask and machine.

My ears are stopped up 364 days of the year, so I can handle the one night of WOOOOOOOSHing I get from my Adam Circuit. It is comfy, but it can sound like the cave-wind scene in Rambo: First Blood, too.

I suppose there are plenty things worse than being deaf.

Perhaps the old Breeze was loud but I guess I have a newer version of the Breeze and I cannot hear anything from it unless there is something within 8 or 9 inches in front of the exhaust airflow path. With nothing blocking the airflow, my Breeze is dead silent (breathing in or out). I too run a ceiling fan on high and also play a Delta sleep system ambient soundtrack all night long. Maybe I'm just sensitive to the sound frequency of the mask's airflow?

I'll hold onto the Headrest for a while and see if I can get used to it but right now it does not look like it will ever displace my customized Breeze (a little extra work to make it comfortable and stable but well worth it).

Thanks for all of your comments.

i agree, dreamstalker, i was very pleasantly surprised by just how quiet the breeze is...and i found it very comfortable...i just can't seem to keep a seal with it...lately i've been switching back and forth between the breeze and the aura...i just wish i could get consistant results from one or the other!

loud Aura

Post by Catnapper » Sun Aug 05, 2007 7:50 pm

Yeah, the Aura whatever is loud. Probably it is not the best mask to try if you are a newbie.

Oddly enough, I think the sound diminishes as the night goes on. I think it softens as it warms up from the heat of one's face and then makes less noise. Am I making that up? It is not silent ever, but it does seem quieter in the middle of the night.

The very best feature of the design of that mask is the exhaust over the head. I have been annoyed by the sound of the exhaust from other masks as it hits the pillow or whatever, including when it hits my hand or arm. For some reason the exhaust sound of other masks is more annoying to me than the sound of the Aura as I breathe.

In the beginning of using CPAP therapy when I was a newbie, everything bothered me. Now that I am an old Hose Head, the little things don't seem so big. Yeah, they are a nuisance, but I am getting over it. Hey, maybe THAT is my success story! I am getting over it!

I'm reading all these comments with interest as I'm trying to decide on a new mask....RG has me intrigued with the Aura (replacing the breeze) and I've been looking at the breeze as well, so now I have more food for thought.
Noise doesn't really bother me as I wear earplugs each night so I can sleep with the buzz saw that sleeps next to me......

I like that DreamStalker didn't have to modify or adjust the headgear on the Aura. I just donated my tail to "Locks of Love" so I'd have to modify the modification to the breeze headgear.....At least as I understand it.

Thanks for all the comments!!!!
cheers

Noise from Aura

Post by kteague » Sun Aug 05, 2007 10:50 pm

My first few nights with the Aura/all other names I kept thinking the mask was leaking on inhale and couldn't rest for fidgeting with the mask. That was with the medium pillows. Switched to size large and greatly reduced the noise. Once I knew the sound wasn't coming from leaks, I quickly got used to it and barely notice it any longer. I'm using the deconstructed version with 2 pantyhose tights straps.

(in a granny voice) WHAAAT?? can't hear ya! mine was really quiet sonny

oh if noise is a problem try a Soyala nasal (suggest a Large size just looking at ya and considering the outside sinus pressure issues, reason I went to the large from a medium). it will handle your higher pressure (in fact they make a version that can handle up to 40 Hpa/cm), but I have a goatee, it's kept trimmed but compared to a beard it works pretty good sealing things up even with that.

Even with the goatee, I still wear the straps loose, it is silent, now if I could just get rid of that noise of the air traveling through the hose I'd have it made.

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...

I trust your significant other has been tested for sleep apnea? If not, 2 cpaps are more fun than one .

Actually RosmaryB she's still in denial (even after she's seen the benefit it's been to me). I'm working on it, but........
The big issue I'm trying to overcome is that she's an RN so I don't know what I'm talking about.....Sad, because she sees the results of untreated apnea every day in the ER.......

I ain't givin' up!!!!
