It took a while but after two sleep studies, one for observation the other for titration, various appointments, and the help of some very cooperative people, I am finally the proud owner of a bipap pro 2 with a heated humidifier and more masks than I know what to do with. At the second sleep study after being connected to a bipap, I had one of the best nights sleeps I can remember. Last night - the first on my own - was not as refreshing but I think I'm on the right track. The mask and hose didn't bother me as much as the spring cold I am trying to shake. Lesson number one: masks and tissues should not co-mingle.
My face is a bit swollen but I figure a cool cloth in the morning will help that until I get used to it. The sleep clinic sent me home with 4 masks and the DME hooked me up with an additional mask. I changed in the middle of the night from the new mask to the clinic sample, but took a nap with another - more comfortable but a little claustrophobic. Hopefully napping with it will desensitise that feeling.
Since learning I have sleep apnea, I have learned a great deal from all of you - thank you for that!
Sincerely,
A new member of the club

Welcome to the board, napper! Wow! Five masks right from the get go! How did you charm the sleep clinic into turning loose of so many?
You've leaped straight into the rarified atmosphere of being a lab rat like so many of us who keep trying mask after mask.
What are the names of the masks and which do you like best so far?

Napper,
I'm envious. I sure wish I'd been sent home armed with more than one mask to try. That would have been sheer heaven!! And it should be the standard procedure for every new person tested and started with treatment, to provide them more than one mask. Wow. I wanna know where YOU live (so I can go to your sleep center)!!
Welcome!

The people at the sleep clinic were wonderful. They stressed how important it was to be as comfortable as possible and to understand the options available. I'm new to this so I hope I get list the names correctly: Respironics Simplicity, Profile Lite, and two different sizes of Nasal-Aire units. From my DME I was given a Respironics Comfort Gel. My insurance will cover a new mask every three months; since I didn't even know what sleep apnea was six weeks ago, I'm not sure whether that is standard or not. In addition to the sleep specialist/pulmonologist, I have been seeing an ENT doctor to help keep my sinuses under control - they have been a problem as long as I can remember. That has been a definite help.

Greetings From The Newest Member Of The CPAP Generation
Howdy, Kids.
My equipment is on order after two consecutive days of sleep studies. I had barely cleaned the electrode goop out of my hair when the hospital called with a cancellation and asked me to return for a night on the machine. They said I had stopped breathing 100 times per hour and wanted to get me back ASAP. The second night was decently restful and I was sent home with a prescription for a setting of 18cm. After research and consultation with other CPAP users, my choices were the Respironics Remstar Plus C-Flex and The Goodknight 420. I chose the Goodknight for its size and portability (I travel a lot). The Goodknight H20 heated humidifier is part of the package. Although the Respironics Comfort Curve had just been announced, it won't be available for shipping for another week, so I ordered the Swift at the recommendation of the hospital staff. My order should be here mid-week and I look forward to finally getting some rest and not `zoning out` during the day. I'll keep an eye on the forum and contribute what I can.

Linda,
who is curious about your photo, what's that thing you're holding?

What's In The Photo
In my photo, I'm wearing Bunny ears and my white motorcycle helmet is wearing Bunny ears. One version of my avatar has the ears in motion. I'm still looking for it.

So Rested Gal was right?? (I should never doubt her, she's never wrong)GordonSchumway wrote:In my photo, I'm wearing Bunny ears and my white motorcycle helmet is wearing Bunny ears. One version of my avatar has the ears in motion. I'm still looking for it.
My eyes aren't good, I hadn't even seen the rabbit ears. Cool, though!!
I wish I knew how to use a motion avatar. I haven't been able to figure it out. Recently I saw a graphic of a person walking, but it's made up of letters and typing symbols. Cool looking. Oh well.
Great avatar!
