Side sleeping leakage?

Post by SleepyJill » Sun Jul 01, 2007 5:41 pm

Ever since being pregnant with my first, I can only now get to sleep on my side as they discourage back sleeping while pg. I am finding that it kind of pushes my mask to the side a bit though and I get some leakage. Any tips on how best to avoid this?

I also am a side sleeper. The type of pillow made a big difference for me. I currently have Target's Shapeable Bed Pillow. I have looked at the PAPILLOW, made with CPAP use in mind and may get this in the future.

As above - pillow type.

I find that a feather or if you're allergic a 'fake feather' hollofill type pillow that you can pound into a shape works best for me. Also jst crank your straps in a little tighter - you tend to tilt the head back when sleeping on your back but when on the side it points forward more - which causes more slack in the straps.

I use the Papillow. I love this pillow. It's shaped so that the mask kind of hangs over the edge. It is the most comfortable pillow I have ever had. I feel it was well worth the price.

While the type of bed pillow does make a difference, Lepeu's reference to strap tension and head postiion is a very important one for both nasal cushion and FF masks.

I have seen posts recommending the memory foam pillows as a solution for this problem. Since the Target shapeable pillows work for me, I haven't tried the foam ones myself.

Try hanging your headgear off the side of the pillow.

Or try another mask that is better designed for side sleeping. Click on my mask icon below for my recommendation on that.

Cheers,

I currently have a stash of Nasal Aire II cannulas in Small or Extra Small. Please PM me if you would like them. I'm interested in bartering for something strange and wonderful that I don't currently own. Or a Large size NAII cannula. :)

Your little ones are adorable!!!! My younger son is 22 months also! It's hard isn't it...to have OSA and little kids...I'm a much better, calmer, more patient mom in just the few short weeks since I've been on CPAP! It's been such a blessing to be feeling better!

I'm having trouble with my ff mask and sleeping on my side...I just called about getting the PAPillow...I hope it helps!

Thanks for the compliments on my sweeties! I agree, it is very hard to be a mom of little ones and be tired all the time. That is wonderful to hear that you get to be more calm and patient with a few weeks of CPAP!

Let me know how the PAPillow works for you...I may have to consider seeing if we can fit it into our budget!

Brenda said it perfectly for me. I've been using the double edge PAPillow for a year and a half. Love it. I'm a toss 'n turn side sleeper...works great for that.

Of course, my mask is an ideal design for burrowing the side of the face against most any pillow.

Activa+Papillow

Post by Guest » Sun Jul 15, 2007 7:00 am

I noticed you are using the ultra mirage nasal mask. The Mirage activa has been out for a couple of years, and the sealing ability of the ACTIVA is far superior to the Ultra. The activa is only available in size medium or large, so unless you need a size small, I would definately encourage you to ask to trade up to the activa.

If you are recently setup, the DME might actually trade masks, otherwise, see when your insurance allows a new mask.

Combining the Activa mask and PAPillow should be a virtual guarantee of leak free side sleeping.

The Activa sizes are shallow, standard, and large. I take a small in most masks, and the standard fits me perfectly.

Lucy is correct about the size names, shallow, standard and large. It is interesting that you can use the standard, but use a small in other masks. When this mask was first released, I saw a lot of women posting that the standard was too large and wishing for a small or petite. While the main difference between and shallow and standard is that the shallow is designed for a flatter nose bridge, I seem to recall a poster or two referring to it's length as being a tad bit shorter than the standard...I'm not sure if this is correct as I haven't personally used the shallow...

Anyway, if the available sizes fit, the Activa mask does an incredible job of maintaining a seal, even with lots of movement in most any sleeping position.
