As part of my hassles finding the card needed cleaning, I removed and re-installed Encore Pro many times. [ Note for geeks, when I removed it I found that there will still traces of Mako in the registry but didnt know what to do with them . ]. Xian, you can do it too but it didnt help me.
What I learned was that it was very important to follow James's installation instructions implicitly. I am in a hurry now, can some-one find Jame's instructions and post them.

I checked on the preference menu and I am indeed set up for a USB device, COM1...
Could it be that the card reader itself os broken or defective? (can't remember dropping it, but...). That still would not explain why I cannot re-install the EncorePRO software on my laptop...
Encore will install and re-install completely separately from the reader. It's designed that way so that it can be installed in a doctor's office, talking to a central database, and still see the data without having to go into a room with a reader.
What this sounds like is that you have the wrong driver for the card reader installed. Unplug your reader if it's plugged in. Go to Start -> Control Panel. Double click on Add/Remove Programs. Uninstall anything with the word "Smartcard" in it. Then, when that's done, put your ENCORE cd in, go to the folder that says Smart Card Readers, and run the setup.exe program. Reboot. Plug in. You should be able to get a green light regardless of if Encore's running, just by sticking a card in.
As for your laptop, we'll need to know more about what's going on to have any idea how to help.

Some update on my continuing card reader saga...
I managed to re-install the card reader drive on my desktop. Yeah! The only problem is that the Pro Analyzer does not seem to get earlier data for anything but the variable breathing, the humidifier and pressure setting (except for a few nights... weird, seems random). I got the full report directly from Encore PRO (and saved it as a PDF), so it is not a big deal. For new data, I seem to see the whole set on the Pro Analyzer. I will see how things evolve...
I still have not been lucky re-installing Encore PRO on my (faster) laptop, however, even though it looks like I have uninstalled everything... I guess I will have to live with that, until I can get a computer geek/guru/wizard to come to my place and figure this out...
Thank you all for your help.

What happens when you try to install it?

The installation goes on for 20 seconds or less and a window shows up telling me that "an error occurred during installation and that I should contact the manufacturer". I am paraphrasing a little, but the important point here is that there was not information or code that might hint at what kind of an error I "encountered"...
The installation disc is not corrupted as I successfully installed EP on my desktop... so I am at a loss here!
Any tips welcome... I already tried to uninstall everything I could find that pertained to EP, the card reader or the PRO analyzer, and rebooting each time, and that did not help...

And you are correct, I probably am misunderstanding a few things... For example, I thought the COM 1 , COM 2 etc... were names for each USB port... If that's the case, I can try several combination COM X and USB port and find (hopefully) the magic combination! . . .
You may notice the COM pull down menu shows the COM as 'greyed out.' If you click on another radio button, then you will see the COM ungrey and because of poorly written software, may not become 'greyed out' again when selecting the USB radio button that showed the COM greyed when it was selected previously. However, if you select "cancel" and then go into Preferences again, you may notice the COM is indeed once again 'greyed out.'
Greyed out means it is not active/selected.
By the way, like many others, I am having trouble with the card reader driver loading properly upon reconnect (even to the same USB) and get the error message "SmartCard reader not detected" which is why I'm reviewing posts to find a solution.

I am by no means a computer geek or guru and know just enough to be dangerous : 0
Here is my experience with this issue:
INITIAL INSTALLATION: I installed EP and SmartCard and used EP drivers vs drivers that came with the reader. I was able to download my first nights data after this setup.
UNPLUGGING CARD READER: I did not find the Windows utility active that normally shows how to safely unplug a USB device. I just pulled the USB.
USB SAGA: The next day (in this order) I plugged in the USB (into same port), booted EP, double clicked on my profile, inserted the card into the card reader, then selected Download Data after which I received the error. I then took the card out, plugged the reader into another (second) USB port and Windows sponsored the USB setup program. I inserted the card and selected Download Data, and everything worked. The next day the second USB port became unusable so I went to the third on my laptop (with a mental note that I would soon run out of USB ports as my notebook only has three free and I would not use my fourth port for anything other than my external mouse : ) I repeated the second port scenario and everything repeated. Now I am out of new ports and am forced to figure out what the heck is up.
UNINSTALLING/REINSTALLING CARD READER: I then uninstalled reader from each USB I had used it in. I then reinstalled it in the 'first USB port' and it worked again.
CYCLE CONTINUES: I put the reader back into the same 'first USB port' USB and nada. Then I go through the USB saga again. I get three days of easy downloads by playing the 'go to a new USB port' game, do the uninstall from each USB port, and start a fresh cycle.
Intel Core 2 T72000 (notebook)
Windows XP Pro Version 2002 SP2
Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (ENCOREPRO)
(I noticed that the driver is not digitally signed - don't know if this is significant to the current issue.)

Follow the steps uninstall/installation steps below for a work around from the EP error message "SmartCard not detected." This process will allow EP to detect the card reader. The steps are for Windows XP.
CARD READER UNINSTALL PROCESS
-Plug in card reader to USB port you want to uninstall
-Open device manager
-Select View
-Select Devices By Connection
-Expand (by clicking on plus sign) the first USB Universal Host Controller
-Expand the USB Root Hub
-Repeat until you find the USB Root Hub that shows the card reader
-Right click on the Mako Dt3500 SmartCard Reader
-Select Uninstall
-Select OK
-Repeat to uninstall from any USB port you wish to use
-Remove card reader from USB port
CARD READER INSTALLATION PROCESS
-Have your disk handy to use during the card reader installation
-Plug the card reader into a USB port
-Install drivers
-Open EP
-Put SmartCard into card reader
-Download data
-Remove SmartCard
-Exit Ep
-Unplug card reader
I do this work around as I haven't been able to put the card reader back into the same port it was first installed in without the EP error message "SmartCard reader not detected." This workaround allows you to use a new USB port each time until you run out of free USB ports and have to go through this process again.
My hunch (no proof as of yet) is that the drivers are poorly written and do not allow Windows to keep them in place when the computer hibernates or is shut down.

We had this problem tonight when we were installing for the first time. My husband went to control panel, system, devices, then select smart card reader from the list then choose install driver and make it browse to the cd rom where you have your disk. Then it was able to find the device after 3 previous attempts at installing but still not able to "find device."
I have no clue if this will help you. I'm pretty clueless with computers.

After many versions, Windoze is still Windoze, not so user friendly. We are already in 21st century, computers are suppose to be easy to use. I guess they never learn. Too bad Encore pro is not available on Mac OS X.
