Headache?

Post by snoresnout » Thu Jun 28, 2007 7:11 am

I'm slowly adjusting to my machine nasal pillows, etc but now have a morning frontal lobe headache. It's not severe but I'm not someone who has headaches very often. Anyone with experience or comments.

Could you be mouth breathing or mouth leaking?

That's a possibility especially when I roll on my back which is when the apneas kick in.. Does it make sense that if my machine is set too low (8 now) for when I'm on my back that I would compensate by mouth brathing. Would that cause a headache?

Mouth breathing lets all the pressure escape through your mouth. So you aren't actually getting the treatment you need. Sleeping on your back may be letting your mouth fall open easier. Could be you need a higher pressure when on your back but you don't know until you stop the mouth breathing. Try a FF mask or tape your mouth shut. If you have a problem with the tape you can try polident strips. I tape every night with excellent results. I use Roosters method of taping;

Hi,

I'm getting headaches too. They aren't strong, but certainly not pleasant to wake up to. Luckily they don't last more than an hour for me.

I don't think I'm mouth breathing. My husband checks on me every so often and never sees it open.

I was on cpap years ago with a nasal mask (not nasal pillows) and don't remember the headaches.

Hmmm

Your husband would have to stay up all night to check you for mouthbreathing, that would soon get old. You most likely have the problem of mouthleaking when in Deep Sleep, by then he is asleep too.

The only way to check for mouthbreathing effectally is to have a machine that records data abd the software to read it.

The other answer is to prevent it by taping, or use of a FF Mask that fits well. Jim

Nasty plastic smells, including from my disposable F&P water chamber (made from cheap resin), used to give me headaches. You might try cleaning your equipment and letting your cpap run during the day to get those smells out.

Try the Scented CPAP Mask with Pur-Sleep's CPAP Aromatherapy--CPAP Diffuser and Essential Oils.

Hi Jim,

I haven't been to the doctor yet to let them read my smart card. Do you know if the card records that data?

I'm definitely not a mouth breather during the day but I guess that doesn't matter.

Thanks.

This is just an idea - the two of you that mentioned mild morning headaches are somewhat new to CPAP if I read your posts correctly. Is it possible that you are in deep sleep or REM when your alarm goes off, and that is the cause of your headache? I heard from one sleep tech that this can happen.

Just my 2 cents.

You are showing you use the "M"agic Pro, It does record that in the full data report in Encore Pro, You can see your mask baseline when you first put it on and get it seated correctly any other leaks after that are really leaks, not mask venting. You want them to remain as low as possiable. However if you are on APAP, if the machine raises your pressure, your leak rate will be reflected as higher due to the pressure change.

A mouthleak or other leak will show up as more leakage. I find that 38 lpm or higher, affect my treatment to where it matters. Jim

Thanks for the suggestions!

Is there a way to tell what posts you've posted too? I looked at the FAQS but didn't find anything.

Denise, are you accessing the data from your machine via the LCD? Here is how to do that:

How to access M series LCD data: You just need to press either of the arrows on the control panel to scroll through the LCD data. It will show average pressure, AHI, leaks, hours of use, etc.

That should show if you have large leaks.

Snoresnout and Denise. Probably you both are mouth breathing (as stated above). It's not something you would even be aware of. So, that's the first thing to investigate.

Also, it's possible that your headaches are caused by too little pressure (or too much pressure). That is something you should talk to your doctors about and perhaps raise the pressure by 1. Note: I would probably not talk to my doctor and raise the pressure by 1 for a few days just to see if that's the problem or not.

And, if you are new to nasal pillows, it might simply be the cold air blowing up your nose. You can try to turn the humidifier up a bit to see if that helps. Caution: sometimes raising or lower the humidity can cause congestion, too. So, keep that in mind.

To search for someone's posts, go to Search (top left of screen). Then on the second line on the right, type in the forum members name. That will bring up all the posts.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies regarding how to search for my posts.

As for looking at my results, I do check the lcd but never really understood the leak rate. i have the original swift.. i can't remember if i'm getting a 37 or 38 on it. would that be right? I'll have to search for the leak rate page, i know its on here in the faqs, but didn't quite understand it when i last read it, but kinda do now.

I have increased my pressure by 1. I didn't see any real change as far as apneas.. but can't remember when the headaches started if it was prior to that. maybe i'll go back down 1, then if that doesn't work.. go up by 2.

Thanks.

Denise
