cpap is pressure therapy, C-flex is a type of Bi-Pap. That means that C-flex or a Bi-Pap lowers the air pressure as you exhale making it alot more comfortable. a Cpap machine may offer a C-flex or Bi-pap mode.
When I switched to a machine with C-Flex my air swallowing and bloating was totally gone. C-flex breaths with you, I like it alot and will never go back to straight Cpap.
Only respironics makes C-flex but im sure other brands have similar technology.
Dont settle for Cpap alone if you can get somthing better with more options do it.

Cool....thanks. Mine has a function for both....I have the RemStar Pro and you can set it (I think, unless it's a uselss function that can only be turned on by a healthcare provider) to run cpap or cflex. Thus, this may explain my problem with low pressure lately on the machine.

Also, check the bottom of your post. The keywords you mentioned CPAP, CFlex link to definitions.

Andy is quite on with his description, but you need to be careful when talking with your sales folks or Sleep Doc.

CPAP is the generic term for the therapy to treat OSA (Obstructive Sleep Apnea). CPAP stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure. There are also APAP machines which are Auto-Titrating Positive Airway Pressure machines which automatically adjust to provide the necessary airflow to hold your airway open.

CFlex is pressure relief on exhale. It is available on most Respironics (A manufacturer of machines) CPAP and APAP machines. Like Andy mentioned other manufacturers have similar technology with different names. Resmed (A manufacturer of machines) has their own version called - EPR (expiratory pressure relief).

BiPAP is a different type of PAP machine. They are usually much more expensive and needed only in certain cases.

Do some research on the different terms to get the right machine for your needs. I recommend a machine with C-Flex or EPR so that you get the pressure relief to make exhaling easier. Don't be afraid to ask questions on here... Everyone is very nice and extremely helpful.

You can turn on anything with your machine even if you are not a DME.
If you need help ask and people here will tell you what to do.

You're too sweet, Pat...but no, I shouldn't, couldn't, wouldn't.

RTs and RPSGTs have to learn and know a bajillion things I don't have a clue about.

Besides, then I'd have to do what a boss sez. I don't think a DME boss would like my suggestions about pantyhose, tape, BiPAP Auto machines, and such.

Nah, you'll be running the shop in a month.

Can you imagine it - masks stacked on one side, a selection of pantyhose, mantyhose (arraanged by color) and various straps, multicolored tapes, hooks, scrunchies, hacksaws for Aura's etc. ?

Seriously though, I believe you're getting help to far more people by what you post on the net, than you would in a brick and mortar DME.

Do I need a Bi PAP?

Post by John 32 » Tue Jun 26, 2007 7:12 am

Hi.

I had been using this RemStar Auto PAP for about two months (20-4), for my preassure was yet to be found. I was starting to get used to the machine, sleeping a little better. My last titration's results came out and I have just been prescribed a preassure of 16. So my DME changed the auto PAP (20-4) for a RemStar Pro CPAP (16). I tried it last night with no luck, for they forgot to activate the ramp feature. I know this can be fixed, but I also noticed I wasn't feeling able to exhale easily. It felt as if the C-Flex feature wasn't on at all either, or maybe it's not as effective with such high preassure. I also felt the speed at which the machine pumped air was too fast. Is a Bi PAP better for this helping you exhale easier, as well as letting you have your own breathing pace when you need a high air preassure like 16? Do Respironics machines have this feature, or do I have to switch to a Resmed machine (the other brand my DME has)? Do I need a Bi PAP at all, or will the C-Flex feature on solve this problem? Thanks.

John.
